Hatchling...
breaks through the shell
watching...
sun bathe his world
in bright yellow hues he is unaccustomed to
hatchling...
lost in the blue

Catching...
cold morning rain
scratching...
his head to gain
a clue as to what this phenomena means
hatchling...
new on the scene

Leaving...
nest far behind
weaving...
broken he finds
sweet mother slain by the jaws of the night
grieving...
caught up in fright

Hiding...
in the underbrush
trying...
to be still and hushed
so he won't fall victim to foxes who'd munch
on his poor bones if he became their lunch
hatchlings...
endangered bunch
