Before the frilly speeches begin
Before the readily prepared tears fall,
Before everyone gets into that mood of melancholy,
Let me be the one to tell you.

It was never supposed to be this way.

I never meant for this
To happen to you.
Ever.
Sorry will most definitely

Not cover it this time.
And I did not accept
The responsibility
I know that.

But the truth is,
You weren’t ready
And neither was I
Our lives would not

Have gotten much farther
Than merely the beginning.
And we would have lived
Miserably in Limbo.

Where you are now.

I was fine
Until she asked
If I wanted you to
Come back some other time.

And that tore me to pieces

I promise you,
I can and will
Give you a better opportunity
When I am able to

We both will.
I promise you
Nothing less than that.
I just wish I knew your name.
