Age four, I crept
into my parents’ room,
terrified that a Creature of the Night
would ****** me away—
afterwards, nights of my youth
always spent in want of my mother’s embrace.

But when the dam broke
and the house collapsed
and the center did not hold,
I floundered, fifteen and useless,
and I realized:
humans are monsters, too.
