trailing with head hanging
he loosely held a furry leg
dangling childhood
ear in the dirt
it was a popsicle
had him lagging
more specifically
not having a popsicle
had him lagging
our backwards glances
feeding young misery
the occasional grumble
and sigh
as smooth round stones
rolled past our dusty feet /
