On that 1st day they waited..and then,
The whistles  blew and over the top they flew,
Side by side, with nowhere to hide.
Hoping to make it to the enemies side.
Noise, noise, everywhere, pieces   of bodies in the air.
Makes separated, lives devastated.
Every second at the Somme a man died,
Now we ask, why,why,why ?
So many young lives cut off in their prime,
Letters to home, telling of this terrible crime.
Mothers,sweethearts,sisters,brothers,
All hearing that their loved one, wouldn't come home.
No more our peaceful land to roam,
Instead , left behind in a foreign field,
Fields that one day red poppies would yield.
