Yeah, I’ve said the words so often
And so many times the same,
That sometimes when I say them now
I’m not sure I know her name.

So when I met you I was sure
Just like the times before
That I would love you for a while,
Then show you out the door.

Chorus
But you told me that you loved me,
And you told me I would know,
‘cause you felt way deep down in your heart
My love for you would grow.

V2
So I told you you were beautiful,
And I told you you were fine,
And just maybe when the stars were right
That someday, you’d be mine,

And I told you all the pretty words
You could ever want to hear,
But then I felt a little tug,
A tiny twinge of fear.

Instrumental bridge

V3
So I told you that my love for you
Was nothing more than dust.
That whatever I may feel for you
Was little more than lust,

And I told you I was sorry
‘Cause life was just that way,
And I never really loved you,
And that you should go away.

Chorus
But you told me that you loved me,
And you told me I would know,
‘cause you felt way deep within your heart
My love for you would grow.

V4
Then you took me in your open arms,
And you said you’d never part,
And you told me that our souls were one,
You could feel it in your heart,

And my struggle to be free from you
Grew much weaker with each day,
So when you silenced all my fears
There was just one thing to say,

V5
So I told you that I loved you,
And I told you that I knew
‘cause the happy feelin’ in my heart
was oh, so sweetly true.

Yet though my heart is peaceful now
I wonder to this day,
Where would I be if you told me
That I should go away?

Chorus
But you told me that you loved me,
And you told me I would know,
‘cause you knew way deep within your heart
That my love for you would grow.
