Oh, this world
with all its promises
how it ever tries my soul and causes such pain!
"If you have all the wealth
that your life can hold
you shall be king of all
and all the world and all its worth
shall worship at your feet.
and all that shines
and all that glitters shall be yours
and all the ladies fair
shall pledge their love to you.
But oh woe to the man
who has no gold in his hand,
his life is only a curse
and cursed shall be he all the days of his life.
And all the world shall never know his name.
And everyone with gold
all laid up in their store
shall drive him from their door.
And with that it is known
that earth is the devil's true home.
For with gold and kingdoms
and all the worlds riches
he did tempt the only son.
' For if you are the only son
then make these stones bread.'
' For why should you die
when all the sons of dust
only wish all that I can give.
And with an empty belly
their love soon flies away.
And all their hearts are then
as cold as a stone.' "
But oh how I know
that the price of love so true
has never been measured
in silver and gold.
And the name of the man
that had been written with all the riches of the world
is but a name written in smoke.
For soon he is dead and forgotten
and never again shall his name be known
and all his memory forever sleeps
in a forgottenΒ Β grave
when all is done and said.
And all the hearts of all his false loves
are as cold and heavy
as a granite stone
and only cold ***** ashes
are left to melt innocent white snow.
But I know the treasure I seek
was never dug from a stone.
This heart within me
how it glows like an inner sun.
For my soul and my heart
in its deepest inner reaches
is forever bound to you
with an everlasting bond
that is stronger by far
that any bond of paper and ink
and any law ever formed by man.
And all the bars and all the steel
can never take my love form you.
and all the price I know
that I must pay
to buy the love
that beats in your scarlet heart
is a pain that no mortal man
can ever know
for all the pain in me
you ever sow
that makes my heart
like a withered and dying rose.
But you have all the love
that my soul and heart can give.
For you I shall bear it all
to pay with the coin of my heart
and all my pain and woe
to win your heart
the heart of my lady so fair
and my heart how it beats and beats
for my lovely lady fair.
For always I have loved you
from the very first day
and upon that day
it seemed all the world began.
Oh, how I remember the day
you first held my hand.
Though you knew not my name
I swore with a sacred oath
that I would never rest
day nor night
till I forever held you in my arms
and you knew all the love
that burned within this heart.
And all my life I shall give
and all my passion
I shall pour from my heart
though the price I should pay
should be a lonely cold grave
for this flame of love
burning in my heart
shall never go out
and I am bound to you
on cords of forever.
And for you this flame
shall ever burn.
