During the Depression little Evie
sewed dolls from Granny's quilt scraps.

World War II knew her as Evelyn.
Builder of planes, defender of freedom.

Cousin Bobby called her Auntie,
He moved in with us when he was 12.

44 years of first graders adored Mrs. Bennett,
who read them stories with love and expression.

She was Dad's one and only Sugar.

Now,
one breath later,
she is

the deceased
the body
the cadaver
the remains

Nothing more.
