I watched you
walk into the room
four years ago,
watched you from across
the lecture halls and heard
your Irish consonants;
fell for your London eyes.

I watched you on your tired nights,
watched your black dresses
& strappy shoes,
I felt me fall in love with you.

I let you borrow ballpoint pens
and never let my eyes meet yours
and brought you coffee,
opened doors
and waited for it all to pass.

I watched you
fall
for someone else.

I tell myself
that we survive
no matter how our hearts may break
we live and breathe with shattered lungs --
and unrequited
love
will last.

I just hope
that you're
happy.
