He picked up the photograph
Fingered the bent corner gently
Admired time’s handiwork and
Compared familiar faces

A couple more becoming than any he had encountered
Her hair was so fair shaded
Her eyes so bright
And her smile so widely genuine
That he was brought to tears
I watched him weep and become aware
As he realized he had never seen her smile
Like that in his lifetime
