A hero really is just a stranger
hidden in a mask
to keep them guessing

They swoop in at the last second
save the day
and vanish...

Cape flying in the wind like forgotten banners
they can never stay long
after the villain has retreated

Vanquished for another day
they can never get too close
hold too tight

They fly on burning wings
every stroke cutting away at the time they have
to save those that can't hold them
feathers burning
falling
counting seconds in ashes

The battles
The victories
The villains

It is only with the crucial villains final defeat they see their error
but it is too late

So as always they must depart
now seeing the truth the villain always knows

Without them heroes are just strangers in capes
that everyone forgets
