VESPERS BEYOND.
The old monk
limps into Vespers,
his black robes hang
to one side
like an old ship's sails
blown in a harsh wind.
I inhale the smell
of fresh baked bread
and stale bricks
in the afternoon cloister;
she had kissed me
and opened up
like a young blossom
in sharp Spring.
Dom Charles,
bespectacled,
reads from the life
of Mary Tudor,
as the monks ate
in the refectory;
queen's tale
and ****** story.
