Utility

For years I mistook usefulness for identity. A bridge carries weight. A lantern provides light. A hammer drives nails. Each thing justified by what it could do. Asked what I wanted, I offered function. Asked who I was, I offered utility. It never occurred to me that a man might exist for reasons other than service.
