Being Yourself

You are dangerous

when you refuse

to perform

the roles of others —

and never your own.

In the theater of life,

all disguises

are borrowed.

The masks,

far too thin,

are easily soaked

by your tears

and rip apart.

With the curtains

now lowered

and the lights gone out,

the illusions

fall as well.

The contract

signed

before we were even born

comes to an end.
