“You”

They said “I’ll love you forever”

And I thought it was sweet.

The kind of thing

People keep

in their wallet.

I held those words

With eyes full of joy

But I didn’t understand

What they truly said.

They said “I’ll love you forever”

But they didn’t mean “you” as in me.

And they never lied

I just couldn’t find their truth.

They love the seat

I sat in.

The space

I took up.

They love the part

I happened to play.

So when I had to leave,

Someone else got to learn the lines.

Someone else took that stage.

Someone else became the “you” I once was.

Their promise stayed intact

They said “I’ll love you forever”

And turns out they didn’t lie

I just wasn’t the subject.
