When I was younger, I believed the following. When a female wants "just to be friends", that's a euphemism for "you're not good enough". You're basically a plate of left-overs. Perhaps because the guy has shown neediness or beta-male qualities, perhaps because he's effeminate or puts her on a pedestal, which women hate, whether they're aware of it or not. Confidence, aloofness, a sense of mission in life (or purpose): those are attractive qualities to females. Friendship between the sexes? It's all right (might be valuable) if the guy isn't sexually interested, and a waste of time if he is. Wishful thinking on his part: if I stick around and do her all sorts of favours, maybe she'll change her mind, or come to love me. No: if she acquiesces to you like that, chances are it's because there's no one better around, or because someone she wants DOESN'T WANT HER. On the other hand, if she doesn't love you after all those favours, she might even come to resent them because, again, it comes across as needy behaviour, like one is trying too hard to impress or get something out of her. That, at any rate, is what I used to think.
