Already gone

The flush came over them both

like an angry wave.

Entangled in its grasp,

they struggled for air.

This—

this was not a feeling

either of them knew.

Now drowning—

do they sink,

or hold together,

and swim for shore?

Treading water,

one looks to land,

then back.

A hand

reaches out—

but the other

has already drifted

far

into the sea.
