LIKE WATER

I wish I was the water

said the rock

water dances, swirls and flows

somehow it always knows

just how to move, just what to do

as it joins

to me

to you

I wish I was the water

said the rock

it just lay there

in river ground

being heavy, fixed

and round

trying desperately to be

of some small help

to you

to me

until just now, at last, it found

courage to launch up off the ground

at once it meets the water's sway

thinks that it may help someone a tiny bit today

- and then does not remember

remember what to say

it tries to meet as warm and soft

as all that water there, aloft

but a rock

it is not able to

connect with water

me

or you

Having failed, the rock retreats

until the river floor it meets

and there it will forever lay

still, disillusioned, in the clay

I wish I was the water

says the rock
