Is Hope Really a Good Thing?

Is hope really a good thing?

Sure it gives you a reason to run

But so does fear.

A deer runs from a wolf

As quickly as a child

Runs to their home.

Is hope really a good thing?

Because yes

It lights up our eyes.

But so does gluttony.

So does greed.

So does every shiny thing

We reach for

Thinking maybe it’ll be enough.

Is hope really a good thing?

Or is it just one more

To be lost.

One more thing

Life asks us to carry

Only to pry loose

From tired hands.

Is hope really a good thing?

When it leads

Only to disappointment.

When tomorrow arrives

Smaller than imagined.

When prayers return unanswered.

When doors stay closed

Long enough

For sore knuckles

To forgot why they ever knocked.

Is hope really a good thing?
