Carry it like a heartbeat

I carry it like a heartbeat I can’t set down,

My way of holding you closer even when you’re gone

A weight in my pocket

A heartbeat in my hand

The rhythm that keeps me steady

When the world feels too quiet

I never trusted the quiet

The empty space between us

The fear that without it near

It would fall to silence

And maybe

The text I didn’t answer

The call I never made

Could be the thing i couldnt live without

I carry it like a lifeline

To a world where you’re close

Like if I let it go I’d let you go

Afraid that if I did you’d slip away

Like the silence would surround us

And there would be nothing left to say

The glow on my screen

Or the buzz in my hand

Scared that you won’t be there when I let go

Like without it the connection will break

And this will all turn into a mistake

So I carry the heartbeat in my hand

Just to keep you close

Just in case the silence

Will take over what I need most
