You and I

Who are you? Who am I?

The same emotions that made you, made me.

If I ever hurt you, step into my body.

Then, with a subdued voice, tell me

where it aches and how I have wounded you.

I will do that as well.

Thus, we may not let the arrogance of our minds

claim victory over the wisdom of our hearts.

But—

we are not truly each other, are we?

Our heartbeats are forever strangers,

however closely we study their rhythm.

Emotions flow and cascade in ways no two souls repeat,

so let us not presume another’s feelings

nor call anyone ungrateful,

lest it bruise the psyche

and lock us within our minds.
