Each year, each winter, each time
the first snow falls
familiar feelings fall with it.

Clean, dense white traverses
heaven to earth.

All covered, cottoned and calm,
I stand watching,
muted now as earth,
sure, silent and certain
as my own inevitable death.
Nancy Katherine Dec 2011
I've come to find that every year
after dark on Christmas Eve,
my Heart and Mind meet without fear
at the corner of Bitter and Sweet.

They seem to laugh and chat and grieve.
Both have Her own agenda.
Each others'  burdens they relieve
on the corner of Bitter and Sweet.

Their topics differ wildly.
I'm not privy to them early.
They always part quite mildly
from the corner of Bitter and Sweet.

Their opinions vary without exception.
I now wait and let them linger.
They come from differing direction,
to the corner of Bitter and Sweet.

The other times they meet -then leave,
it's always unexpected.
I relish their meeting on Christmas Eve
under the lamppost of Bitter and Sweet.

Evening
Nancy Katherine Dec 2011
Light blushing through trees,
my journey ends, dawn to dusk.
          Evening always comes.

For A, K & J
Nancy Katherine Dec 2011
Admittedly it's true.
I am biased over you.
Rose color skews my view,
while there's nothing I can do.
My predilection dears?

Waves of Water
Nancy Katherine Dec 2011
Through every door and window,
gushes the water of my discontent.
Currents of his resentment pour through.
Waves of Water

A futile try
to hold back the tide of my anger.
I turn in time to watch
our marriage
float away,
one more dead and stinking fish.

Winning?
Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
You won and won
again
Pyrrhic victories
lost your
war
One of my new favorite words!
A Pyrrhric victory : a victory whose costs outweigh any advantage that may have been gained.
Neat history on the origin of this noun, if you're interested.

Time Runs Hard
Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
Thoughts fly through memories
past time run hard,
followed fast by experience.

lips reach each jut and hollow,
blessed sturdy hands hold on)

Text Message
Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
"long day, long week and want to be in your arms forgetting all about it"

Is this love?
Someone safe, trusted to hold on as you let go?
So comforting they make
all your day's, week's, work's worry forgettable?
And you, like a beaded necklace,
suddenly come unstrung?
Oblivious,
as your beads
bounce and roll
wherever
they
will.
This started me thinking after a text message I received.

Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
In one hour, six minutes of real time
this weekend will end.
These minutes,
already moving into memory,
will exist outside of time.

I will keep these
past tomorrow,
        past later,
past when I am old.

I will remember smiling;
to think about you,
about me,
about when...I loved you well.

I Learned
Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
Plate - Fork - Spoon - Knife
I used to be somebody's wife.

Smile - Laugh - Frown - Cry
Twenty years went awry.

Generous - Frugal - Cheap - Miser
Old friends said I'd end up wiser.

Red - Green - Purple - Blue
Now I'm sure this much is true.

Wind - Snow - Rain - Sun
I'll never keep a loaded gun.

Kissing me,
you hold my head hard.
Your fingers tangled in my hair
to turn my head.
For one quick second
I wonder
if you could break my neck.

Larger Truths
Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
Feeling for truth I'm afraid to find
MY HANDS
plunged in past my elbows.
GOOD OR GONE,
doubt riddles me like winter weather.

Fissures worn through the pan;
MY DAY.
Not bailing, I sift..
catching only truth too large
to fall through the
CRACKS.
Nancy Katherine Nov 2011
My warm hands wander
'round your collar and down,
******* each buttoned button,
over crisp cuffs.

The edge of cotton white
at the slide of your neck.
One curved ear draws my fingers
into your hair...

My mind is gone.
You are my body,
                         my bias,
                                   my best.

Center of Night

Morning
Nancy Katherine Oct 2011
In that moment
When my body starts to wake
But my mind lags behind,
I often reach for you
And never understand
Why you're not there.
