Hollow eyes
and dust-filled tears
Frail and decaying
from waiting for years
Blood stained hearts
as love scorned
When we perished
no one was mourned.

I see only the shadows
that beauty casts
In shades of red
from this rage
that deeply seethes

How the light fades
Even now love remains
Looking through illusions
Promises spurned by parched lips
Mediocre words carved into flesh
Ever more, love remains

As we travel on down this road
The fires ever burning in our hearts
Reduce our souls to ash
Like the falling leaves that litter our path
We will not be reborn
But instead we decay into the earth
Our flesh and regrets
A feast for the maggots of lies
Broken bones entwined in the roots
of mighty trees, skeletons that hold the sky

Falling rain soaks our mangled corpses
We will not return to the trenches
Our sunken eyes peer into the black
Never to see home
Never to see your smile
Ashed cigarettes no longer dance like fireflies
No more songs will fill the cold air

Long have I wandered this aimless path
To rest my mind among the rocks and trees
I've left my heart atop the mountains peak
Higher than the clouds can reach
A new dawn on the horizon
But I care not for what lies ahead
For what follows in the fog behind
The choking vine of years gone by
