re-owned.
Melanie Dunn Nov 2010
My youth,

Innocence,

That once sparkle in my eye;

Stolen.

Robbed of a life that could have been,

That should have been.

But now, the strength never to have been seen before, arises.

Overpowers everything that was.

I turn my stolen youth to wisdom.

My innocence to a newborn maturity.

And that sparkle, now returns to appreciate life's beauty.

I stare life in the face.

Square in the eye.

And take it back.

This is now my opportunity to re-own my life,

and everything that has been taken from me.

I am here now, and I have survived.

Stereotypes
Melanie Dunn Sep 2010
In reality everyone judges.
So caught up in their name brands.
Whether or not we hold our grudges,
Labels are for soup cans.

We assume that everyone we meet fits a certain frame,
It's easier to do this, so that we will understand.
But once you get to know someone, your first impressions' put to shame.
Because labels are for soup cans.

Smart kids are nerdy and will never be intimate.
Popular kids are jocks and girls with fake tans.
Then there's the rebels who take risks and think nothing of it.
But labels are for soup cans.

In reality everyone judges,
But again, labels are for soup cans.
This was just a silly villanelle.

Watch the sunsets
Melanie Dunn Sep 2010
I just want to watch the sunsets and dance in the rain.
There's not a minute, not a second to spare in time.
I want my mind to be open, and wash away the pain.

It's hard to take risks because I feel there's nothing to gain.
I feel like money buys happiness, but I can't spare a dime.
So I just want to watch the sunsets, and dance in the rain.

When there's no chance to think, my mind becomes scattered and I feel insane.
Nothing fits together like it should, just like a rhyme.
I want my mind to be open and wash away the pain.

I try to understand people, how they work and why they're so vain.
But my minds a mess, no words come out just like a mime.
So I just want to watch the sunsets, and dance in the rain.

Life would be easier if I knew how to express myself and not refrain.
But when I tell how I feel, it's almost as if it's a crime.
Iwant my mind to be open and wash away the pain.

When I finally relax, my thoughts pour out like a drain.
It's like I'm going nowhere and I'm not even in my prime.
I just want to watch the sunsets and dance in the rain.
I want my mind to be open and wash away the pain.

Never Settle
Melanie Dunn May 2010
I love my mother dearly,
But I learned from her mistakes.
Do not settle.
This is your life, and life is what you make it.
So make it great.
Make it meaningful
And make it worthwhile.
Make it make you smile.
And jump in whenever you can.

Take a stroll, take a walk
Down memory lane.
Is this the life you wanted?
Make is beautiful and be an inspiration.
Don't look back seeing that you ran.

Give a little and take a little.
Love others, but most importantly love yourself.
Discover your beauty and talents
And be the best that you can be.

Don't hold grudges
And be open to opportunities.
Don't be afraid to laugh out loud
And feel free to enjoy yourself.

Never settle for happiness when you know it's not at it's full potential.
Go after your dreams,
and never let anyone get in your way.
And when you fall in love,
You will know.
So never settle for someone who can't bring more to your life than you could on your own.
So embrace it.

Happy Ending
Melanie Dunn May 2010
To hear that giggle and remember the laughter

Smell the scent that brings back those memories.

Feel the warmth of that goodbye hug,

And embrace those tears of joy.

Makes me appreciate all that's good,

When times are going bad.

The precious moments from the past,

Come in different ways to my future,

And turn my sorrows into a meaningful bliss.

To look at each picture and remember every moment,

Makes all unwanted photos worthwhile.

Every prank pulled that makes you angry,

Is worth the laughter in the end.

Each time you're scared and want to hide,

It's always nice to have someone to hold you.

The days you mope around in your "feeling fat pants",

Are replaced when you strut your stuff in your skinny jeans.

The times you're feeling hideous,

Are forgotten by the nights you feel on top of the world.

And every time you say goodbye,

Makes you look forward to the next time you'll say hello.

So don't waste time getting angry jealous or upset.

Just think that you'll look back on this and laugh.

So don't take everything too seriously,

And live life with a happy ending.
