Excess
Matty Sievers Jun 2016
Seeking therapy at the bottom of a glass
She drank her fill just to make time pass
Just to spend one night in the black
A night of blissful forget she can’t get back
Unless of course
She stays on course
And with Excessive force
Brings forth
A state of delusion and confusion
In which she stumbles and falls
Only for not a soul to hear her calls

In the midst of all of this
A hand is outstretched to offer bliss
Some form of release
Some form of comfort and
Some form of peace
So she takes the hand and accepts
And finds herself face to face with Excess

But Excess knows no less
Then to express gratitude
Through slurred words and murky attitude;
With blurred vision
And regretful decision
She descended upon flesh
Like it was all she needed not to feel less;

Soon enough though she realised
That no boy in her bed
Could quiet the voice in her head
That no liquid down her throat
Could make all this pain go
For Excess brings on temporary relief
From all the sorrow and from all the grief
But Excess is no more than a moment in time
A still image and broken promise
That says “you’ll be fine”
   Seen as her only resolution
Despite its chemical makeup, Excess offers no solution;

So her bed became no more a place of rest
But more a stain and a pang of regret
Her name became well known
And her body became well seen
A lover of irony, her sheets always found themselves clean
White and pressed
Washed to Excess
In some form of attempt
To make they’re history less
And in some form of attempt
To see if she could forget

Not just the boys
And not just her bed
Not just the black
And not just Excess
But the path that brought her here
And the things she’s left to fear

The kids all called her desperate and needy
Excessive and greedy

They were right

They just never seemed to care for ‘why’.
