Sarah
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
As I traveled down that long forgotten road,
You were there, a helping hand.
Though words were rarely spoken,
Your presence was enough.

As the pitch black of night approached,
You didn't let go.
You held my hand through the darkness,
And led me to the new dawn.

As I stumbled from exhaustion,
You caught me as I fell.
I owe my life to you, my love,
A debt repaid throughout eternity.

As the dawn approaches, I whisper,
Sarah, words are not enough.
The warmth of your embrace
Becomes more debt.

Spend forever with me,
My love is all I can give.

The Cold Truth
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
You look back at a life of forgotten dreams and empty promises.
You wanted to be a doctor, a fireman, an astronaut, and an artist.
All at the same time.

You wanted to fall in love with Prince Charming,
Handsome, intelligent, strong, courageous, loyal.
Perfect in every way.

You wanted to have four beautiful children,
Two girls, two boys, obedient and kind, who love you,
As much as you love them.

Instead, you wait tables for meager tips,
You divorced your husband,
And your children hate you.

You cry for dreams you never worked for.
You cry for a man you didn't deserve.
You cry for children you didn't love.

Life will never be what you want it to be.
Get over it.

Dark Destiny
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
Shattered
Is the only word that describes me.

Forgotten
By the friends who abandoned me.

Betrayed
By the false smiles around me.

Deceived
By false hopes and broken promises.

Lost
In a sea of uncertainty.

Murdered
By my own ambition.

Savior
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
Have you found Jesus yet?

I found him on the back of a milk carton.
But they wanted to lock him up.

I found him at the Home Depot.
But he called himself Hey Suse.

I found him on my toast.
But I was starving.

I found him in a homeless man.
But he just wanted my spare change.

I could not find him in a church.
I could not find him in the Book.

They said I'd find him in my heart.
But my eyes could not see him there.

I steadied the blade over my heart,
and plunged it deep.

I found him in a river of blood.
But he called himself Life.

Buried Alive
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
Tonight we'll walk down a dark and forgotten path,
Where few dare to tread.
We'll return to that place where it all began,
Where I first felt to warmth of your lips,
That place where you touched my soul.
And as we hold hands, pushing through the darkness,
I'll remember the rhythm of your beating heart.
Tonight you'll remember that feeling too,
As my soul resonates with yours.

What you'd thought was gone
Only buried itself deep in your heart.

Off the World's Stage
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
Tonight is like any other night.
I tremble as I drift into the land of dreams,
Afraid what will come with the dawn.
In the morning I'll put on that fake smile,
A mask to hide my fear.

The day passes like a script in a play,
Going through the motions,
Through lines rehearsed over and over.
I'm just another actor on the world's stage,
My mask is one of many.

At home I return to a Greek tragedy,
A dysfunctional family doomed from the start.
I wear my mask and lose myself
In the fake and distorted world.
No one is who they really are.

I remove my mask and lie down once more,
Afraid of the coming tomorrow.
Afraid that I'll wake up in a world that's real,
Where I've lost my precious mask,
And I'll finally be forced to be me.

Words Unspoken
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
I found the letters you left behind.
I found the letters you wrote to me.
But when I looked for love,
I couldn't find the word.

I remember the time we spent alone.
I remember the warmth of your touch.
The gentle brush of your lips.
The sweet flagrance of your hair.
But I don't remember hearing the word love.

Maybe I didn't read the word.
Maybe I didn't hear the word.
But I fell in love in your arms,
And I felt loved.
In the end, that was enough.
For me.

Suicidal Tendencies
Matthew Mayfield Apr 2013
This world will end tonight,
By these hands of mine.
I will ***** out the light that burns inside me,
And put an end to this suffering.

That faint and feeble light will fade,
As the blood flows from my veins
And feeds the grass beneath my feet.
This world, my world, will be lost forever.

And yet your world, the only one you care about,
Will continue to turn slowly on its tilted axis.
You'll continue caring only about yourself,
And eventually die, the same as me.
