He spoke of buying
sports cars in Prague
of cancelled flights to Tuscany
This man/boy
peach fuzz mustache
clumsy conversation
childish arrogance
entitled
He spoke as if I knew this world
or that I cared
He seemed a great tragedy
of expectations unfulfilled
of unrealized adventures
He didn’t know whether
he came from old money or new
nor what either meant
He wore the outfit of a schoolboy
Khaki pants
blue blazer
loafers
I imagine him at sixty
in the same clothes
never understanding what happened
to his goals
his unyielding goals
still telling the story
of his misfortune in that East-block country.

Her
Her locker was below mine
She seemed to be
of Arian descent
At first glance
we both knew
she was out of my league
tanned, strong jaw
healthy
long legs, Roman nose
She was kind to me
and would compliment my shoes
or secretly wink at me
while she walked to class
arm in arm with the boy who could
she was too beautiful to ******* to
my imagination held on
the girl with the space between her teeth
the girl with the cheap clothes
the pudgy girl
the girl with the painful laugh
they were all my conquests
The godess below me would pinch me
and call me “boyfriend”
My position kept her pure
an untouchable trophy
to the man who could have her.
