Flopping on the Deck
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
Walking in through the door, of any defined place
Everyone turns their heads, must check out the face
Smiles all around, always friendly to a meal
Not knowing if where, you're standing is real

Just a random traveler, sort of passing through
Or a foreign regular, need a home from the blues
Have a seat, have a beer, the first one's on the house
We want to ask some questions, find out what you're about

Where are you from, what is it for money that you do
Have any friends, what reason is calling after you
We'll figure it out, fit in our own pieces
Cut and trim as needed, been our way for ages

Welcome to stick around, but we'll have to dig in deeper
Become part of the tribe, with its' own pecking order
As you're so new, you're the lowest of the low
What price you'll pay, will never be known

Because no matter what you do, you'll never be like us
You're too young, smart or dumb, or just too much trust
Sure have been around a bit, but that just brings envy
Reasons to stay away from it, look out for a slashing

Not booted out, but taught to learn ones position
From teachers able to learn nothing, from any transition
That is something I learned, whenever exposing ones neck
From so long ago, flopping over on the deck

Kick me, throw me, hit me, stone me
Taking it isn't easy but I understand your reason
Spikes in the wheel of never ending turning
Rocks to dust under the weight of learning

From too many demands never knowing why
The rules of creation were given two sides
Takers and givers masked to repair
But what does it matter if nobody cares

Do whatever it is you do, but understand I'm not through
If you want to help, lend a hand, and let's start anew
But I already know your answer, not sure why I even try
Feeling is hurting, fighting to fly

See the Bird that Flew
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
You have to wonder why it took so long
Tried everything, ended up wrong and blue
Only at the end, nobody a friend
The anchors are cast, see the bird that flew

A Line to Row
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
No matter how you try
Your left to die
Just the way it goes
The right to fly
Before you blink
No time to think
A line to row
From land to sky

No More Noise

Make your stand
Make your point
But don't include
All the noise

A Few Questions
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
Is it real, what you feel
What to tell, what’s the deal
What to connect, what’s the cost
What’s the gain, what’s been lost

Passion or habit, know the worth
When to play, when to look
When to cross, when to knock
When to jest, when to mock

Choices or voices, why to start
Why to continue, why the part
Why today, why the pay
Why the fear, why the stray

Over here or there, where to go
Where to escape, where is home
Where for work, where for play
Where to head, end of the day

Shame or strange, how to try
How to grow, how to die
How to climb, how to brew
How to swim, how to new

Chilled Dreams
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
Sometimes when you can barely crawl
Maybe sick or after a fall
All distractions are gone with the breeze
As you settle down, feel the freeze
Chills everywhere from a fading core
Need a spark to grow for more
Fuel the fire and let it run
Hear the silence before the gun
Or not this time, maybe sleep is fine
Perhaps some dreams of a steeper climb
Or so you thought as you close your eyes
Before you awake you’re given lies
Of a time from so long ago
When all was well and still had hope
Carrying along as if nothing happened
Between then and now the trappings
That you thought you escaped but never did
All you found were spots that hid
That seemed to work out all fine indeed
Except for the remnants of lingering dreams
Will they ever go away sometimes you ponder
What do they mean to stick around longer
Maybe a test when not ready to see
Still holding onto the fallen leaves
Never the same a repetitive drunk
Those are the ones I wake up sunk
Others are more inspiring I suppose
Finding the new and see where it goes
Wondering if real or a forgotten past
To settle a score or extend the track
So many places and people I’ve met
Swimming in my brain and stuck in my head
Sometimes you control the way it goes
Others you sit and go with the flow
After thirty days I’ll be a bit stronger
Trying to harness the dreams to remember
Direct their flow to a different road
Waking up my feet will know
Will they follow or more of the same
Chilled from dreams, a heading is claimed

The Forest That Knows
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
The shadows that grow from the forest that knows
Stretch to the ends where the water flows
The creatures that hide from the reapers glance
The features that provide attractions to dance
Where in the green do the roots have dreams
Without being trimmed and left is free
It starts in the middle answering the riddle
On your own outside of the bubble
Outside of the books, the leaves of the day
Starting with seeds, spring no delay

Along the Oasis
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
As the world keeps spinning, with its tendencies
Adapting to changes, the falling leaves
The rising shoots, struggling for sun
Digging roots, but still can run
To where or how, answers are shown
The place to stand, your feet do know
With purpose inclined, rocks and rain
Cannot stop, the surging strain
Knowing no limits, time full of moments
Pieced together, a linear sequence
If you can find it, puzzles to pieces
The ripened fruit, along the oasis

Ode to the Fool
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
Ode to the fool
And their never ending plight
Drinking and sinking
Sometimes in flight
For in the end
It's mostly been shown
Only in dreams
Will the fool, be at home

Pulling Strings
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
In a world full of puppets
Who pulls the strings
Is it the ones with the money
With interest on things
The ones with the guns
With offers of orders
The ones getting votes
Popularity taking over
The ones that dream
Maps of the future
The ones that scream
Wanting forever
All of these ones
And so many more
But the one inside you
Cannot be ignored

Thirsty Dreams
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
Feel the rain showering and pouring in your weary head
A wasteland desperately needing a dousing from the dread
From too much racing and skipping on the surface of the dead
Leading towards slipping and falling on a convenient tread
Thoughts of fortune, fame and glory were the stories but instead
Ending up on a scene, broke of dreams, the words no longer said
Let the rain have no restraint to wash away and find the seeds in bed
Help them grow to new unknowns through the infinity in your head

The New Weird

So are you
If not we'd all be
Nothing new

The Cheer Begins
Matt Kavan Dec 2014
Plans of this, plans of that
Plan to do everything, in no time flat
But first before, we can see it through
Space needs, to be wiped out too

To reach for the stars, isn't far enough
To hear the applause, when your ears are deaf
To taste the thoughts, from the finest chef
Smelling the flowers, of final success

What a world, of beauty galore
I only wish, I could have much more
But it'll come, when the time is right
Until it does, I'll be in flight

Up or down, left or right
Today tomorrow, day or night
No more fears, can find within
When a new day dawns, the cheer begins

— The End —
