The Story
Mary Lukaitis Dec 2012
i got on the train
you stood in the rain
yellow flowers in your hair
i walked that long road alone
not knowing at the end
if i would find a friend
or a foe
but that's how the story goes

i traded tomorrow
to pay for today
made deals with the devil
an angel who strayed
what we have in common
is scary in ways
but that's how the story goes

it is the beginning
that could be an end
a whisper of summer
that found winters end
i call you my lover
i call you my friend
and that's how my story goes.

Dusk
Mary Lukaitis Dec 2012
My journey begins here
My future steps unclear
The road ahead is done and said
As is the road behind
Marked in time
Like aging wine
Beneath the cellar floor
My life, my love
My war

In each day I find
Some left behind
Some waiting at my door
So many paths
With no map
No stars to guide me home.
And so I travel like the blind
Careful not to look behind
For time, it can deceive
One moments glance
One missed chance
Could make a coward of me.
So I keep my pace
I’ll run this race
Careful not to flee
Fight my fight
Keep God and light
No end in sight I see

The golden eye of a powder blue sky
Retreats to the other side
Days like these I contemplate
How I can say goodbye

Fields of green
Bask beneath the light of a dying day
Ride into the sunset
The gallant way
That’s what I say

Merely children at play
Drowning in our strife
Reaching out along the way
Searching for signs of life

While the wicked eye
Of an envious sky
Never held a chance

It could have been a lifetime
Caught in a moments glance
It could have been perfection
Beauty by mere chance
It could have been an inspiration
I witnessed at the time
Something true
In the golden hue
That one would call sublime

The gentle falling of a setting sun
Whispers to me now
Speaking truth in simple terms
In ways I knew not how
Expressing thoughts that own no words
Of timeless secrets deep
That one can only come to know
With deaths eternal sleep

Knowing I can never hold this moment
It’s content
Paper thin
A moment of beauty that never can last
Was the Lords only sin.
