Falling Slowly
Margaret Wallace Jul 2013
An empty street lined with dim iron lamps
Snowflakes fall gently in a graceful dance
Empty of life, the pavement gives way
To the wand'ring flakes by the breeze led astray

Tracks left unbidden in the new fallen snow
Look back on a path that is best walked alone
Behind only memory, innocence, dreams
With the future ahead in an uneasy sheen

The only sound heard is the whispering flakes
When weary feet stop and heavy heart aches
Drawn to the sky, the eyes strain to see
The flakes falling slowly, dark night between.

Thoughts fall away, replaced by awe
Memories forgotten as beauty soon draws
Deep pain and fear of days now past
And lays them behind on the empty street's path.

Darkest
Margaret Wallace Jul 2013
Twisted branches wrap around
   seeking out the light
      yet shadows fleeting now surround
         in shades of deepest night
Streetlamps shimmer in the rain
and under the rain clouds glow
hidden moon changing, yet always the same,
         guarding the world below.
The stars shine out in contrast
as the clouds now sighing clear
they will be there to the last
A gentle gift to stave off fear
The strength of the stars will fade
   as the dawn comes anew
men rejoice to see the sun
But day-blind stars still sing hope too

On the Scaffold
Margaret Wallace Jul 2013
Fill the heart with everything new
Leave no room for the old
Plastic smiles and vacant stares
Shadow what's left of a beauty once known.

Each fix a new promise of happiness now,
So leave the memories behind!
Discard your fears, and hold on to the hope
That a Brave New World will be waiting in kind.

Imagine a world where silence is gone
No awkward space between
Noise covers all and fills up the mind,
No need for your own voice to intervene.

Gone is the need to think for yourself
No longer does truth hold sway;
A world without broken hearts awaits,
A painless awakening at the break of each day.

Imagination captured by a bright silver screen
Flashing the lives of the famous
Lives void of rules, regulations and cares
Desire and freedom combine, now blameless.

A day will soon come when the cares of the world
Will no longer rest on the weary
Where pleasure will come with no painful price
In the absence of hindsight, seen clearly.

No longer the price to be paid for our wisdom
The media provides us the answers
The head and the heart are no longer at war
What possible fight lingers after?

After the knowledge is fed by the hand
Which now controls the soul
No longer a need for a mind of your own
When quietly, slowly, you gave up control.

Peculiar Longevity
Margaret Wallace Jul 2013
Shadows fall across the land
Red and gold in graceful swells
The hills are breathing deep with peace
And all unrest the silence quells

A passing storm across the plains
Cannot disturb the peace within
The lightning strikes and thunder rolls
Yet solemn the land returns again

Ageless wisdom calls the soul
As hills and valleys rise
Where the fields unyielding gently fall
And unbroken land meets painted skies.

Midnight Lullaby
Margaret Wallace Mar 2013
The moon is dim, the stars are bright
Their music the darkness fills
The trees are restless in the night
As silver stars with voices chill
Softly heard from years long past
In cold, clear harmony
Sing of memory, fate and time
Caught dancing for eternity.
