Butterflies

You left me on a Winters night
As many often do
Hand in mine, you passed from life
As I was watching you

I sat with you for hours
Until they said I had to go
What was I supposed to do
Well that I didn’t know

I had to tell our children
That their mother had passed away
I tried to sleep, and calm my thoughts
Til the breaking of the day

I met you in the land of dreams
You had flowers in your hair
The radiance you exuded
Drove out all of my despair

You apologised for leaving
It was just your time to go
You said life never ends
There’s only ripples in the flow

You asked me to hold your girls
When they begin to cry
And tell them that a mothers love
Can never ever die

You said you would be with us
In comfort or in doubt
That when we see a butterfly
We’d know that you’re about

You said for me to love again
And it’s important that I do
The girls will need a role model
To help to get them through

You took my hand and nodded
And said it was ok
God will send you someone
To take the loneliness away

You left me in the land of Dreams
With a truly lighter heart
You showed there’s no endings
Just different ways to start

I woke to find a butterfly
Was resting on my hand
I knew then, I could face this day
With all it would demand.
