You probably don’t remember it. We decided
to check if the weird church-y building in the middle
of the shopping centre was a real church. It was.
There were about ten chairs, no space for more.
A cross at the top. No windows. A mother praying
in the corner. It was your last Friday in town. You got
distracted by the brochures. I got distracted by the Post-it board.
Praying for our mum, may she rest in peace. Praying our son passes
his GCSEs. Praying my foot heals quickly. I haven’t been religious
in a while, but I thought of writing and adding one to say thank you for
the love in my life. You came up to me and said you’re bored now,
let’s go. I said yes.
You were weirdly quiet, you said. Were you praying?
God, no. Just appreciating the silence.
