Heliotrope
I watched the sun rise
and fell asleep.

I watched the sun set
and became enlightened.

There is no explanation
Trees grow along invisible streams.

I don't know if you love me or not -
The message was too easy to see
and the music was too slow.
Your friends come to you with nothing
and they leave you the same way.
Your Father isn't learning to play a fast game.
Only the sky knows the color blue.
Will you still follow me when I look afraid?
Only the strong are leaders, they say.
Who can discover silence?
I came from below the rainbow
and watched you glow in the sky.
The warmth within you
became my outer-warmth.
Your eyes are still sad in mine.
I don't know why I wonder if you love me or not -
You never stay in one place for very long.
(I shouldn't take still pictures.)
And only a smug philosopher can give you
an easy explanation for a smile.

Horses for Erin
There is a dark quiet in the mind of horses
that makes you wonder who's directing whom;
Whose voices filter through a thousand clouds of exhaled breath,
whose heavy imprint leaves a thousand telltale marks
from here to the pasture,
in a line not perfectly straight,
but rather slightly curved,
as might be the path of an explorer
too accustomed to a stall's straight lines.

There is a dark quiet in the mind of the rider
as the observing of the creature
and the riding of it
become indistinguishable;
Until the ten shifting directions of the creature's gait
seem the natural style of locomotion,
and the rolling, roaring sameness of factory wheels
seem an abomination.

There is a dark quiet in the mind of the passerby
watching the pair as he leans against the white fence
wondering aloud whether the rider
can distinguish her favorite
through observation alone.

Evening Walk
The night air falls down, down
Filling in the small crevices of the earth
And hanging in the trees like gossamer threads
Yearning to return the Earth's perfume
To her source.

Adding to One
A robin flies past the window. Over
the forgotten sunset lie shreds of memory-pictures.
without a slight variation the ideas would fall.

He sits in a room with no doors. Silently moving
he informs you. When is a dream invisible?
staying outside is easy enough to do. falling around,
there is nothing else to say.

She wears lipstick only in her dreams.
without a slight variation she would perhaps be forgotten.
Does this tell me why?
Her sisters smile, nod knowingly, and then slowly vanish.
Pretending, and moving slowly, will only make her colder.

She sits in a room with no doors. Silently moving,
the tear from her cheek touches the floor.
there is nothing else to say.
