chance
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
as she sat there surrounded by darkness
talking to the boy
she wondered.
what would happen if she kissed him
would the world suddenly crumble down?
would leaves suddenly stop turning yellow?
would the movie they were watching freeze?
she would never know,
because she never took the chance.

waiting
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
I catch your eye accidentally
as you look from across the room
despite the pain you’ve caused
my heart still flutters.
I know what the ending of this story is,
but I still hope that one day,
you’ll have the courage to change it.
unfortunately, I’ll be waiting.

dolphins
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
she felt the sea breeze brush her face
but she didn’t see the waves crashing against the ship
or any dolphins playful peeking out their heads
all she saw was darkness
a darkness so profound
that she felt submerged in the highest level of existentialism
her heart beat against her ribcage noisily
her palms were sweating against the cool railing
but her mind was calm.
could she stay like this forever?
looking out at open sea?

questions
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
how difficult would it be to break the window right now?
is there a chance for stars to stop shining?
or for giraffes to suddenly become short?
Her hand traced the rim of the cup
As it clattered to the ground against the hardwood floors
She took a deep breath
clouds were patiently taking control of her mind
Feeling tranquil
knowing she would never really know

artistry
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
as I walk the streets I’ve known since I was an infant
the cobblestones slowly morphing into a sea of grey
I feel the wind gently stroking strands of my hair
the golden sphere above me warms my soul
creating a sense of peace and childish ingenuity.
colorful buildings around me stand tall,
each and every one of their bricks telling a story
of ancient pirates falling in love with beautiful women.
I ask myself:
how is it fair that such breathtaking artistry exists?
when people have become such malevolent creatures.
we do not deserve to experience such beauty
yet we do, with the blink of an eye,
seeping it all in greedily
exotic paintings adorning rickety walls
hearing buoyant locals shouting out catchy phrases
we try to store such beauty in our minds
hoping one day it’ll make its way down to our cold hearts.

months later
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
she felt her heart shatter
but not loudly, in a way that glass would pierce through the air
but silently
as if the world had suddenly gone mute
it’s as if there were sound proof walls surrounding her heart
she felt broken
but her heart was not ready for the rest of her to feel it
when she saw him the next day,
it was as if a nail was being driven into her chest
but it was numb,
only a blunt pain that was easy to ignore
however, there came a day when her walls weren’t strong enough
and they slowly began falling brick by brick
until suddenly, she was crying
in her grandparent’s bedroom
at 11:11, wondering what had gone wrong
she felt everything she hadn’t felt before
it was cruel, but at the same time liberating
she still pretended to be okay
but no-one knows that the second his name was mentioned
or she saw his silhouette around her
her heart skipped a beat
because although she knew that she deserved better,
she couldn’t help but still feel.

butterfly
Juliana Pérez Jan 2019
what will happen to the broken pieces of my shattered heart?
will they be carefully arranged into a magnificent butterfly mosaic
causing an ethereal ripple of colors as its wing spread?
or will they be meticulously sewn together?
ready for the next person to come along and rip it apart.
