Jeremy Hess Oct 2012
Step one:
Don’t freak out just get home in one piece and go from there, breathe
Step two:
Answer moms call, say you’re almost home, act natural
Step three:
Open garage door, pull in, shift to park turn back the key.
Step four:
Break stare from the seat where she sat an hour earlier and open door
Step five:
Get bags, go inside and try to seem fine
Step six:
Text everyone back, act like its fine and that it didn’t bother you
Step seven:
Flop on bed, close your eyes, breathe.
Step eight:
Open computer and see if she’s on Facebook chat
Step nine:
Say everything you didn’t and come to an agreement
If life’s not good, proceed to find further treatment options.

Day Dreamer

Day Dreamer
Standing on the side scanning the crowd,
1 poem, 2 poems, its my turn,
I close my eyes, deep breaths breathe in,
Breathe out,
All the bodies crammed in that small space caused the air to be hot and heavy
The heavy air filled my lungs almost choking me
I open my eyes to do one more quick scan
The crowd looked a lot bigger from up here
I can’t find her
She’s my only inspiration to keep me going where is she
Focus, read
I’m speaking the words that I worked so hard to memorize but I almost can’t form them
I missed a word, ***** it, keep going
Between the pressure of getting this out and her being on my mind it felt like it wouldn’t end
My heart was racing the same way it did the first time she smiled at me
But if I saw that smile now it would calm me down
One more line, spit it out and it’s over
I scan the crowd again when I finished
I see the crowd cheering but the noise is drowned out by my thoughts
I can’t find her, where is-
Front row, smiling and cheering, I smile back
Then the bell rings and I snap out of my day dream
I look around, desks, a white board, and a pen and paper
I pick up the pen and begin to write…
Standing on the side…

Don't Blink
Jeremy Hess Oct 2011
Don’t Blink

To the people who have never watched the sunset, this is for you
Find a nice spot to look out into the distance facing the west
Whether you’re watching with someone or not, watch, listen, be amazed
If its still there, wait, it’ll go down
The place you go doesn’t matter, all that matters is that you can see it
If you hear your friends talking and laughing say to yourself ‘I’ll be right there.’
As for the kids playing across the street, don’t mind them either, they help the mood too
As it starts to go down watch carefully, clear your head, focus on the sun
Don’t holler to your friends and don’t watch the kids play, don’t even blink
If you blink it might be gone before you know it
The sounds of the kids playing turns into birds singing and your friends laughing turns into a memory rather than wishing you could be with them
Before you realize all this had happened the sun is gone
The clouds are turning darker shades of pink and orange
You don’t want to leave even after its down
If you don’t do this that’s fine, but if you do, show someone, tell them ‘hey, that kid that read that poem on stage was right’
But don’t blink, it might be gone soon

— The End —
