Somme Day
Jan Howard Aug 2016
On that 1st day they waited..and then,
The whistles  blew and over the top they flew,
Side by side, with nowhere to hide.
Hoping to make it to the enemies side.
Noise, noise, everywhere, pieces   of bodies in the air.
Makes separated, lives devastated.
Every second at the Somme a man died,
Now we ask, why,why,why ?
So many young lives cut off in their prime,
Letters to home, telling of this terrible crime.
Mothers,sweethearts,sisters,brothers,
All hearing that their loved one, wouldn't come home.
No more our peaceful land to roam,
Instead , left behind in a foreign field,
Fields that one day red poppies would yield.

Bees delight
Jan Howard Aug 2016
From such a tiny seed, and then a little plant,
It grew and grew like jacks' beanstalk......
Then soon is was as tall as  a tree.
Its top far away from me,
It blossomed into a tower.
A tower of flowers..
Beautiful to see,
Bees came and fed to their delight,
Only stopping in the night.
Drifting along each flower,
Seemingly there for hours and hours.

My ode to the majestic Echium, one of ours grew to 16ft 6 in !!

When
Jan Howard Aug 2016
When do you suddenly become old ?
To others not to yourself....
Inside I am young, but externally old !!
I have no wrinkles yet, so .......
Surely that is good, would I turn back the clock ?
Maybe to relive those lovely moments of the past,
Those moments that you hoped would always last.
Moments with my  parents, husband and children.
Now often real, and they cast happy shadows.....happy times
That will never be forgot, life and old age may not be easy,
But , those moments will last and last
