Caged Bird
James Helward Jan 2017
Bright colors fill the sky
Yet all I can see is grey
Like a bird that cannot fly
I survive, day by day

My will has been broken
My spirit, tattered
My pains, unspoken
My freedom, shattered

There is no salvation
But the cold embrace
Of life's damnation
Anything, but this place

The Great Adventure
James Helward May 2016
As the mist gathers around me
And the waves rage below deck
I look forward into the foggy sea
To which I am but a future-wreck

I glance behind, at my loyal crew
***** and ugly, fearless and brave
I think to all we've been through
And to how much we still crave

Our ship heads into the night
Countless screams echo around
Trying to instill fear and fright
Do they really think that will keep us down?

Innumerable beasts slumber
Looking at us with sharp eyes
From here, I can feel their hunger
But they're just a consolation prize

My sights are set much higher
To an immortal reward far too grand
Entombed in a land far too dire
Even so, I can almost feel it in my hand

Whether I live or die, who knows
I do not care for such petty things
For when the night gives its final throes
I shall be there, with honor befitting a king's

When the sun glows with its first shine
I shall rise, and this world shall be mine!

Rain
James Helward Apr 2016
Rains falls on the ground
Heavy with the weight of sorrow
It's all I see as I look around
Although, I will be gone tomorrow

Endless regret covers this earth
A colorless grey surrounds my vision
Why, why have I no worth?
Did I really make such a poor decision?

This rain, will eventually swallow us all
Our sins, devoured after our fall
Perhaps, the tide may grow high
And with it, carry us to the sky

Humanity's Vice
James Helward Apr 2016
Drums beating to my heartbeat
The sound of clashing lies ahead
Heavily, I move my feet
As I march into the bloodshed

Blood and corpses litter this land
I look and all I see is red
Valiant men make their final stand
As their lives are by the enemy shred

Surrounded by noise and death
'Why am I here?' I ask in myself
As these men draw their final breath
I am overcome not by dread

But by something far more vile
My own smile

Do you know their name?
James Helward Apr 2016
As they head into the night
Darkness is their disguise
They roam about, spreading fright
Looking for victims to terrorize

Faces unknown, voices unheard
Leaving only dread in their wake
Mad, vicious and undeterred
Unhindered by the lives they take

Every night it's the same
Not a soul they cannot sear
Nobody knows our name
The great unknown fear

The Chosen Ones
James Helward Apr 2016
Sitting within your golden throne
All the riches you hold
Do they make you whole?
While the rest of us lay prone?

Wars and famine plague this land
While you complain of food too bland
People are shot and killed
While you brag of all those you billed

Do you have no honor?
Do your actions cause you no horror?
How do you sleep at night,
Surrounded by futures far less bright?

Wondering
James Helward Apr 2016
Like a drop upon a sea
I wander aimlessly ahead
Gazing upon this large tree
Blocking the path I must tread

But is it really in my way?
My little eyes cannot conceive
A world beyond this sickly grey
Something I will never achieve

Dispirited, I look back
To what was once my road
Oh, how I wish I could backtrack
To a time where happiness flowed

But alas, that cannot be
For the only path that remains
Is the one who leads into deep sea
(Perhaps, it can free me from my strains)
