Her and You
She came to call
And stays most of the fall
She takes the ground floor
You the  one above

The  floorboards creaked under your weight
Driving her wild she'd yell at the ceiling
You thought maybe it was from a hospital she escaped
Any scenario was none to appealing

You hoped for more than this
Trying so **** hard to appease
When you met in the kitchen
You'd ask who this strange person is

Something about her had you sweating bullets
You reached for a tea towel while the kettle boiled
She whimpered and you didn't know what to do
She shrieked and you poured the tea

Around the first snow you saw a way out
Above her you'd shuffle sounding  soft shoe on the wooden floor
Using the wash room you'd pull the seat up and snicker inside
Leaving hair in the sink water everywhere and a mirror that's streaked

Before too long our cards were played
The rooster greeted the morning and her bags were packed
You waited at the station to make sure she got on the train
You waved a gloved hand the sound of the whistle made you free

Point of View
Vast point of view,
you can see for miles,
while your son plays games
on the computer, being
he is only four
and still dons a diaper.

Moving through the machine,
a black and white display of  un-colour,
dodging back and forth
while the minutes go in and out,
or do they stick around
in one great unbroken weave.

Nothing to worry about,
embrace this moment
and savour the thought of savouring it.
I just want to sit here
and sip my wine
and dream of the grandiose.

A toast to this
and a toast to that,
they are all on automatic.
spontaneity does not move
well through the machine,
there is always a glitch.

and how to behave

i think it's wrong

i am not there yet
i am still over here
with a viral vertigo
sippin' a beer

i even brought her flowers
and now she's a no-show
looks to me like it's just another no-go

The Machine
Money comes from the machine
The machine comes from the bank

Funny money, digital figures
Flying through the air

Debt for everyone
Paying to being alive

You can't have a warehouse
To store your barter hoard

Unless the Machine puts out
And gives you the cash to build a barn

When money doesn't work any more
Things will change, most think for the worst

Imagine being worth billions then
Being worthless, useless to everyone

The Machine will grind to a halt
You can't live in a fairytale for ever

Wishful Thinking
Living is easy
In the times it's not hard

Once we've learned the rules
We have a fighting chance

No one knows for sure
Until they put the hammer to the anvil

Once I was blind
To the messes I made now I see

Same old story
Same long songs and dance

Reap sow sow reap
Wiser  than I said these things

Not saying who am I
To question I have that right

So much to learn
More than a lifetime to learn it

When I rest my bones
My head darts forward and my heart recalls

It isn't a matter
Of better than or worse

More like a balance
I need to strike

It's true what they say
about vibes...

My key is to keep those vibrations
In some kind of light

All those hurtful things
I lay claim to

They travel space and time
I never knew I was in control

Now I have a fighting chance
Knowing what I need to know

An army of frogs looked on,
Their tongues darting, throats bulging.

Belching out frog speak, they were
Wishing for kisses or at least a licking.

When you do the right thing,
You always do wrong by someone.

Not an insect in sight you see,
Frogs are their plight.

And I, well, I sell their legs
To dozens of eateries.

Their eyes, tearing up, their troops follow suit.

As you slowly slide into memory

My heart is aching and my spirit yearns,
I have to comfort myself in believing
that there is still so much to learn.

As you slowly slide into memory
the thoughts crawl by, I shudder and sigh.

as I let them fall, I tell it all

I can be brutal
or so you say you can tell,
but stop and look again,
this could be a match made in heaven
for two angels straight from hell.

We could sit here
and stare the clock down,
stare it right off the wall..
or dust off our top hats and spats
and strike out on a crawl.

Now, I know what it's like to be drunk
and I know what it's like to be sober,
I know what it's like to be young
and quickly growing older.

The safest bet by a long shot
is to keep time hung up on the wall,
make believe we can predict
just which way the chips are going to fall.

So shake those dice
and give 'em a blow,
before they hit the velvet
you'll know how it's going to go,
we could do it up just like a drug
no need to convince me, I'm sold.
It's back to throwing out a life line
to draw some heat out of this late winter's cold.

He travelled far,

He started growing mushrooms

When the results came back,

Looking across the waters as you stood upon the shore,
a warm feeling your only comfort.
Shadows of a distant past so long before.
memories now fresh of love undone,
the mingling of two hearts that beat as one.

Sights and sounds and vague imaginings
that passed so long ago, a time of love so seldom had
that few have come to know. Me, I was fine up until the time
that you gathered me aside, speaking of matters so far from thought, of how your mind and spirit fought.

Of how you cannot accept the time
although your heart has received a sign.
Why do you unplug my ears and open my eyes
if not selfishly to console your fears and subdue your sighs.

Were you tired of being lonely standing in spirit by the sea,
are you crying out for you only or are you calling out for me.
What purpose served in judging so quickly, so swiftly, so much.
Why make us within arms reach when you remain so out of touch.
You run at the sound of love's unfinished call,
then turn on your heel and unsure of you direction, you stall.

Hiding in your craft you paint to appease your muse,
the oils they dry so slow. Creating visions of what you choose,
still, not always of what you know. Ships and bluffs and the face of love, the canvas again and again will change.
Images of a sea so rough and a love determined to remain.

Paint me out of the picture, paint another man over me,
it will not change that it was me that stood aboard that ship
below the cliff that you stood upon.
Behind you, the rolling highlands of our beloved
Scotland, while below you the thickness of mist
hides that we list, and are going down.

Then waves crashing and men thrashing, don't you know that I have drowned. Your tears add to the vastness of the sea,
I know that although you cry for you, you also cry for me.
Paint dries faster than the tears you have shed,
for a heart cannot master a love that is not dead.

I wish that you had been spared the wait, knowing what it is to grieve. You felt you only standing at the gate though hand in hand with me. If I could have kissed your cheek to take away your pain, for I would do anything for you, even die again...

There was a time
When you could move mountains
With your smile, and the earth
Was such a beautiful bridge.

Now Ursa dips deeply into
The dark well of sky while
Little sister plays hide and seek
Perishing thoughts that ride down with bitter cool

Our birth has been breached
As we cling tight to earlier yearnings
And the wailing wall sounds
A whisper to the cry in my mind

How can you or I claim innocence
When we have both been here before
Shall we cast down our glance in shame
Having lied through eyes of stolen charm

Those times when in spirit
Our fingertips would brace
Prying open closed doors
That had been slammed shut
By a life swung hard

What fear brings this memory
Doesn't every tree stand alone
Until you look below the ground

Some of those ideas
that he did give birth

Some of them good

Give us this day
our daily bread

Those sugar plum fairies
dancing around in his head

"Donald Duck", I've heard them joke
While his big old pipe dream goes up in smoke

I hold him in regard and that's for sure
I have no respect for someone that I just have to endure

In the end he'll be a part of history
While all our lives will remain a mystery

Look, miles upon miles of Canadian Prairie,
So flat you could watch your dog run away from home for days.

Every whistle stop you dash to the closest liquor store
The  cost of drinks making the trip  just tolerable.

Steel wheels and the clack-clack,
Those wheels whistling down the track.

At first, in the distant... mountains.. still so far away.

On and on we go, the steel pushing forward.

Chipping Away
If I could I would cast a spell
With a vocabulary beyond my reach
I would stack it layer upon layer
Deeper and deeper or higher and higher
Depending on the perspective you took
Rounding corner after corner
Finding what was lost and again losing what was found

Chipping away at a crooked alphabet
Making you sleepy-eyed while still wide awake
Casting aside any aspersions asinine or not
Planting new symbols hidden carefully  between the A B C's
Making troubles for those needing order and for those ordering their needs
Lifting our senses so high  knowing depression must follow
After the low you again start the climb only to crash again

I strive to paint a picture so abstract it loses all meaning
Viewed over and over with eyes that look for answers
I lead the proverbial horse to water finally to have it drink
Meanwhile touching a shadow on a cloudless day poking holes in its silhouette
Do I plant seeds in dust hoping to yield a blossom where none can grow
Are my arms stretched outward to embrace a loveless world
That spins so fast that my fingertips are set ablaze.

determined to remain.

paint me
out of the picture,
paint another man over me,

it will not change
that it was me
that stood aboard
that ship
below the cliff
that you stood upon.

behind you
the rolling highlands
of our beloved scotland,

while below you
the thickness of mist
hides that we list,
and are going down.

then waves crashing
and men thrashing,
don't you know
that i have drowned.

your
tears add
to the
vastness
of the sea,

i know
that although
you cry for you,
you also cry for me.

paint dries faster
than the tears
you have shed,

for a heart
cannot master
a love
that is not dead.

i wish
that you had
been spared
the wait,

knowing what
it is to grieve.

you felt you only
standing at the gate
though hand in hand with me.

if
i could have
kissed you cheek
to take away your pain,

for i
would do
anything for you,
even die again...
