you raked the ground
said it was 'round
before the days of growing maze
and breaking soil

you planted seed
and pulled the ****
and pruned it back, a lumber jack
you loved to toil

you used your head
and bought a shed
had every tool and cleaned the pool
you had the goods

you took the time
to mess with lime
and fertilized, they'd be surprised
this once was woods

now gone the man
and gone his plan
and gone the hands that held the tools
and now I'm hurt

they took your trees
which lined the street
where walk and broken curbside meet
now grass and dirt

I'd made a pact
one tree intact
the one that you planted somewhere back
in ninty five

there with the rest
our birds can nest
how we were blessed, my daddy best
on Burton Drive.

those roots go deep
and how, I weep
the lives we've lived, our memories
and stuff we keep

the tools I find
you left behind
I'll tend your garden in my mind
in restful sleep.

follow the night through to day
wait in the usual way
wanting to say something wonderful to you
while lying in wait for the words
tears brimming up in my eyes
holding your hand as you sleep
I wanted to say something wonderful
sweetly, just something that offers some peace

something that sums up your life
the things that we all need to hear
the purpose you have and your ways, how you live
how you face everything without fear
Waiting on wonderful words
something nice...means a lot to me now
I've spent all my life simply trying to speak
and I must get the words out somehow

sitting beside you I pray
though my prayers are eclipsed by my need
to tell you my love just how wonderful words
are when spoken though outdone by deed

and whatever we meant can't come out
Well I laugh then I cry and I shout
you're
terribly

and nobody misses
you more

well we could enjoy a cold beer
and I know how you love that stuff too
I'm sorry and sad my heart's feeling bad
but you're hugged just as hard till you're blue.
and  I know that you know what I mean
it's just sad that they come out this way
I could borrow a line from a card
make it rhyme
while I'm waiting on wonderful words

Walkin' along
I hear his voice and get a skip in my step
I have to watch it cause I'm getting a rep
for acting crazy when I'm walkin' along

I hear his song
and nothing else is makin' me tingle
could be the way he puts the gin in the jingle,
the **** 'n bull is always brimming with fizz
ain't no wonder 'bout the best that there is

though he's old
and it's said
being old is better off than dead
well we know
where he'll go
Who saved his soul and for his sins He bled

and when I'm blue
his voice can reach me in the worst places
bears the burden, then he ties up my laces
and lifts me like the sun in His song
staying with me while I'm walkin' along

Wanting for something worth having and waiting around
having seems better but wanting is all that I've found.

when I was a child, heard many a thing
about God in His Heaven and angels who sing
of streets paved of gold, and the one at the gate
whose keeping a record of me on a slate

the things that I do and the things that I say
It scared me to think that I'd sin anyway
and I wanted to know how the God of great love
could measure our worth by the things we think of

not knowing Him then, well I listened to men
who knew less about God than they did their own end
so I prayed to the One, asking right from my heart
tell me true, are you there, have you been from the start?

can you please help me sort through the myth and the magic
the lies of religion, the hopeless and tragic?
can you meet me right here, just where I am
in my darkness and failures, are you really I AM?

and what of the others who labor for nothing
who have not and hunger for turkey and stuffing?
on the streets, in the cold, stumbling drunk in the alleys
red-handed, white lies, and deep blues in dark valleys?

at our weakest, and numb from the heartache of losing
the ones that we love, left behind with a bruising
will I find you in throne rooms in the back of my mind
like some Wizard of Oz that I'm seeking to find?

A whisper, an answer, a thought I just had
was it me, was it You, could it be, that I'm mad?
But wait, there again, as I stifle my pride,
"Open the door and invite me inside".

"Ask Me, I'll tell you, I'll lead you along
NOT ONE WORD WAS WRITTEN, disproven or wrong"

"And as for the poor and the weak and your past
Your sins are forgiven, the first shall be last."

"I've chosen the weak things to confound the wise
I turn it around for the greatest surprise"

The ONE that I love, the dearest of all
the babe in the manger with the horse in the stall
He grew to a man and we know him as Jesus
fulfilled the great plan and wow, how he sees us

He bore all our burdens and gave us the ring,
we are his bride and HE is our King
and the more that I trust him, the more I debate
I need to ask questions regarding our fate

Is God all around us, is heaven for real
does He care for our flesh and the way that we feel?
is one day like a thousand, as thousands are lost
in the floods and the fires and the wars and the frost?

I'll wait for the answers and try to be still
like the child in the manger and the cow on the hill
I will study to find myself well in Your sight
while we sit by the fire and chat through the night

and when Christmas has finally dawned on our days
and we celebrate giving in so many ways
I must keep in mind how you wiped clean the slate
for once and for all you reopened that gate

and I must not forget though I'm often at fault
that you want me to shine, to be light, to be salt
and always remember that You are the reason
I celebrate Christmas, no matter the season.

half-asleep I'm hearing
the soft and soothing flow
of water's musical soundtrack
in sleepy afterglow

nothing matters,  nothing troubling
and that distant sound is nice
warm springs from hillside bubbling
through snow and thawing ice

blue morning came too early
into my chilly room
kiss the new day darling
from your cozy warm cocoon

and still this brook
is babbling, a semiconscious stream
waters from the highest mount
cascading into dream

still in semi darkness
wishing wake would go away
a pang of something,  sadness
way too tired right now to pray

in my state, no words to utter
sensing he was ever near
wanted me to " simply listen, love
to living waters here"

moving water it's own music
crystal tones from babbling brook
if my ears could fish the woodlands
rushing rivers they would hook....

senses fully wakened wonder
what on earth  that sound?
for you know there's neither mountain
nor a stream for miles around.

No resin fountains flowing
nor a pond with motored fall
only snow and none was going
far too cold to melt at all.

So I sat up rather quickly
could a pipe have rot and burst?
and my stomach feeling sickly
at the thought, and how my thirst

perhaps a water vandal
running down the bathroom aisle
best go check that faulty handle
it's been going for a while.

rising up, my ears were scoping
leaning head toward window sill
softly stepping toward the place
where it was playing for me still

And what would I discover
in the fir tree just out yonder
but a flock of bubbling blackbirds
in the branches and I ponder...

blackbird
babble in light of day
teach this broken heart to learn to sway
come what may

you became the water and my worries washed away....
water wash my sad away
stand in stillness, listen to them pray...
all my days...

Her house was on the way
and from the porch she'd wave hello
she'd be sweeping every day
but now the dirt began to show

Then I saw it on the front page
that her family had no clue
and were offering a ransom
for the whereabouts of Sue

I wondered what had become of her?

they boarded up each window
and they nailed shut the door
of the house where Sue had lived though
just a coupl'a weeks before

And who could hardly blame me
for then wanting friendship's closure
better yet, if I could maybe
somehow aid in Sue's exposure

But whatever had become of her?

I made it my intention then
to help them in their need
for to find a missing loved one
surely is a worthy deed

One day at dusk I wandered
up her front walk, heart in tow
closed my eyes and deeply pondered
were I Sue, where would I go?

Whatever had become of her?

The brightly colored awnings there
had faded over time
and the swing which kept it's secrets
now was caked in soot and grime

though the front steps creaked apologies
the porch was less than kind
and it swallowed this unwelcome guest
and left a hole behind

Would I discover what had become of her?

although there was no body
dead beneath the porch that night
It was down inside that darkened mess
I thought I'd seen the light

and lying there upon my back
recovering my breath
I figured maybe Sue had had
a sweeping brush with death

What on Earth had become of her?

and grabbing for my cellphone
well I dialed 911
I just knew that Sue was resting now
where dialing is not done

and that she was in a 'better place'
than anyone could see
otherwise the swing above my face
would surely be dirt free

What in Heaven had become of her?

Well I broke it to the family
told them not to be depressed
said "she's made it to a better place"
but they were not impressed

I tried another angle,
told them Sue was very blessed
but they billed me for the porch repair
and sued me for the rest

So then, what else could have become of her?

I could not make my argument
but pled the guilty plea
I understood their pain and let
the burden fall on me

Still I'd wondered what became of her
and where she laid her last
and was I right in my conviction
that the ghost of Susan passed?

and was I wrong to tell the family what I figured had become of her?

And then one day, It happened
Sue had surfaced in Toledo
she had gone to meet a relative
who's name was Cousin Vito.

And she'd fallen for the butcher there
who owned a nice estate
and it was there they made their fortune
putting meat on every plate

Sue!

The folks back home eare stunned
that ol' front porch sweeping Sue
whom the gentlemen had shunned
would find love again, who knew?

So I was right then all along
that a 'better place' would do
a home with love and laughter
and a path to sweep with Rue

where her front porch welcomes everyone
with a swing which carries two
Toledo's bestest butcher
Who was swept away by Sue!

And that is what became of her!

come on in to what is real and I will make a nice hot meal
you can turn the TV on, sit back and watch the game that's on
put your feet up on the chair and grab that blanket over there
I'll light a fire, stir the ***, don't get me wrong, it's what it's not

it's not that you are all that great but good enough, the hour is late
it's not that you are all that cold, but last I checked we're getting old
it's not that I am in the need of someone here to bathe and feed
a homeless, worse,  an invalid, a chatty friend or someone's kid

so come on in to what is real and I will make a nice hot meal and
you can turn the TV on, sit back watch the game that's on
put your feet up on the chair and grab that blanket over there
I'll light a fire, stir the ***, don't get me wrong, it's what it's  not

It's not that I invite your gassing, true we've seen our best years passing
Frankly I have much preferred one's tendencies like those deferred
and even though I'm not the type to get involved with TV hype
it's not that I'd could really care or even stare were you not there

so come on in to what is real, and I will make a nice hot meal and
you can put the TV on, sit back and watch game that's on
put your feet up on the chair and grab that blanket over there
I'll light a fire and stir the ***, don't get me wrong, it's what it's not

It's not that I am tired of being here alone, and never seeing
anyone of any kind, I might be lonely, but you'll find
that I am good at making due and if you think you have a clue
then any time you want the best of what it's not, please be my guest!

Where he laid down his books
taller grass overlooks
yonder green, which the landscaper mows
and he smiled to himself,
"Here they'll stay, with my wealth
and if found on this ground,
well who knows?"

Like the soft lullabies calm the child who cries
though he can't know the words, what they mean
yet the music comes thorough
and the words call to you
from the soil where the tall grass is green!

Where the tall grass stays green
and though none has 'er seen
any books to these days
guess they've all blown a ways
but the wealth of this man
can you all understand
is the land where the grass never greys!

yes, it's true
and indeed
this old man knew his seed
and indeed
grew green grass that was tall
that's not all...

it was in
his own hand
that he wrote
"Golf is Grand"
and his song
to this day
sung by all.
a poem I wrote for my dad about a man who grew his business, developing a hybrid seed which grows super green tall grass with strong roots which, when planted on hillsides would prevent landslides in heavy rain. Though his invention was used on hills far and wide, and prevented slides which would have been catastrophic, few people would give the name of it's inventor a thought. He did not care about fame, and instead his legacy was in authoring a simple little song called "Golf is Grand'".  Ironically, and for obvious reasons, the thing which made him a very wealthy man was not especially popular with golfers, something he played almost every day.

but lost her in the neighborhood
of several hundred thousand other people
and by the time she found him there
his drink was lost, she couldn't care
she stood there drenched in sweat beneath the steeple

and never mind the dusty ground
with legs to watch, and Stanky Brown
is dragging through his medley, nasty fella

and oh such a wallflower it has become

each sentence seems more like attacking

You were still asleep
        when from music I awakened

And to my delight

                 wind is slicing wooden rail

Got me out of bed
       frozen in my sleepy head
                   clinging to the words
Could I keep this song?

sometimes it's better to wish than to have what you might
for wishing gives wings to the promise of things
and brings hope as you move toward the flight
so you do what you must, have to clean out the rust
feel the thrill which is building inside
as  you wait for the air which will lift you from there

I'd like to find the poetry hill
that's hiding from my sight
observe as poet prodigies
pour out from heart's delight...

I tend to hear the rhythm
from the ground beneath my feet
the thing which drives my words along
is marching to a beat.

I'd much prefer the heavenly home
the nest or hive or hill
where poets mine the best of what
remains unwritten still...

some buzz around fresh blossoms
gently pollinating poems
while others come from darkness deep
with couplets forming tomes

I wait in joyful silence
as they read their precious lines
which draws the listener into
that which opens up our minds.

And as I lean down closely, seeing
poems have formed a hill
I'm  bitten by a poetry bug
whose rhymes affect me still.

here alone I've faced a darker day
Hard to know where you begin, just like the rain
you touched my skin and suddenly I'm drenched
and looking for a place to hide away

With you, with you
Hide away with you, with you

Take me back to where you're from
and dry me off beneath the sun
and speak to me the words which turn cold winters into summer
Melt the ice within my heart, please make it safe
and never part my life with you is so much more

With you, with you
Summer fun with you, with you

Clouds move in and storms roll past
the darkness comes but never lasts
in suffering, somehow Grace has seen us through

and threads of love are getting thin
whatever comes, I'm hangin' in with you

With you, with you
hangin out with you, with you

Looking back I couldn't see
he storm clouds rising up inside me
here alone I've faced a darker day
Hard to know where you begin, just like the rain
you touched my skin and suddenly I'm drenched
and looking for a place to hide away

With you, Ed, with you
Hide away with you, Ed, with you

Take me back to where you're from
and dry me off beneath the sun
and speak to me the words which turn cold winters into summer
Melt the ice within my heart, please make it safe
and never part my life with you is so much more
than what it was, a ******

With you, Ed,  with you
Summer fun with you, Ed, with you

Clouds move in and storms roll past
the darkness comes but never lasts
in suffering, somehow Grace has seen us through
and when we're tired of being kin
and threads of love are getting thin
whatever comes, I'm hangin' in with you

With you, Ed, with you
hangin out with you, Ed, with you
Right. A hilarious song I wrote a few years back to the love of my life, Ed Crockett ( name changed)
Rules of Ed: Never promise anything and you will be off the hook without any guilt in however long it takes her to see the strings which are binding her to your little pinky.

Words are a gift or a weapon, and it would seem that wars could be avoided if we knew how to speak the right things...to be more diplomatic.

worthless dreams
they are turning down the street
of my subconscious mind
creating story lines
the subtle lies
I'll watch tonight
and feel less of me
than what I dreamed
i thought i'd be
in real life.

Take the time
in your waking hours
to do what's right and
find the power
to create the things
God's leading you
this precious hour
to be everything He made you for
and then tonight
it's His delight
you'll win the fight with
worthless dreams.

I'm told a man from Nazereth
a carpenter, had planned His death
from somewhere way before the birth of time
would be a thing worth finishing
for none could wear His wedding ring
until the final pardon for their crime.

And taken from the midst of sin
an undeserving place I'm in
beneath the cross, I stare up at The One
whose blood poured down that gruesome day
in pain the man was heard to say
with his last breath, "That's it, My Work is Done."

They took his body torn and dead
removed the thorns which pierced his head
and crying for this Man they'd come to love
wrapped him gently in the way
as was the custom of the day
without a doubt, they questioned God above.

Now placed inside a darkened tomb
and sealed in stone by soldiers whom
could not be caught asleep lest they would pay
but something happened as He planned
His tomb was somehow left unmanned
as angels rolled the stone aside that day.

So WHO IS THIS who claims to save
in three days risen from the grave
who paid a debt which we could n'er afford~
now written into history
He wrote the world a mystery
and solved it one day, cause that's my Lord.

Fulfilling every prophecy
the Only One my heart can see
is Jesus Christ, be sure you cannot hide
I'll face Him on my dying day
my One True Love who's made a way
to cover and protect his precious bride.

Not entirely crazy though a little bit insane
outside in the daylight, her mind runs as clear as rain.

I took the test they gave me
to find a compatible fellow
Roses are red, Violets are blue
but my heart is screaming yellow.

Bottled up my beeswax
showered off the gloom
drew a breath of sunshine
pouring through her room.

Talking to a stranger
not the average Joe
wait until I meet him
the only way to know.

Yarrow is a color
I heard the Asian mutter
hold the petals 'neath your chin
to see if you like butter.

An over-ripe banana
brown speckled, getting soft
waitin' for his perfect match
the others he has scoffed.

Not easily misguided
I won't buy into hype
Perfect match confided
He's not the risky type.

Yellow is not fade proof
it washes out in time
hang your heart out here to dry
wind blows it off the line.

Whatever is the point here
of how she did you wrong
your history's no matter to me
it's always the same old song

No longer scared, just waiting
been down around the block
tasted and been tested
bid farewell to bio-clock.

Today I am feeling ready
tomorrow I'm bleeding blue
orange you glad I'm yellow
a bright and crazy hue?

I don't need the internet
or men to entertain
just read my lips
and bring some chips
I'll meet you at the train

My People perish
what to do
they see the boundaries
run right through

they take the shield
and throw it down
the thorny brush
my painful crown

The garden bed
they trample on
and now not fed
they linger on

and turn against
their only hope
the One to cleanse
their wounds like soap

The hand which wipes
away their tears
was stained with blood
two thousand years

before  you saw the
light of day
He died for you
and come what may

He calls to heart
which turns again
to filthy place
the darkest sin

Messiah knows
He leaves the rest
to find you in the
another mess

He draws you back
to quietness
restores your soul
to joyfulness

and washes clean
and sets you free
to live again
in harmony.

I stood before the town folk, who were all revved up, in gear,
" I'm laying claim to 'Yonder Road', which leads to my lot there".
And as I spoke, I found my voice~ "And I, G Clair, it is my choice
to take it back" and dared the few, who looked me in the eye, and knew
they'd met their match but here's the catch,
I took it straight, right down the hatch...
The road's not mine to take.

"We must decline. It's on the line, the Powell Township County Line"
~So half of it is theirs to sell? And so I'm thinking "What the hell?"
I never planned to buy the land, which leads up to my pile of sand,
and half a road? That's just a load of ****-a-mamey crap and toad!

Not one spoke on my behalf, that half-a-road was just a laugh,
but secretly I knew their game, to share the road, and to their shame,
I'd have to buy the township out, if private is, what it's about.
And so I kept my peace of mind. "I'll pay for Yonder, rob me blind!"
"And all in favor, just say 'Aye'" The room went silent. Then a cry~
from down behind the furthest row, an "Aye" and then the rest in tow
and everyone you would have thought, would die before the road was bought
and on that day, the vote was wrought, and ALL for one road to my lot.
the road was mine to take!

And as I drove on down my road, I wondered, if it ever snowed,
if they'd still plow a private road, or leave it to the one who owed
the price of owning graveled lane, which cut in two, by grassy mane
and wondered if I'd have to mow the place which pulled like undertow~
which drew the settlers through the plain, where nothing grows in fitful rain
yet wagons, traveling there in vain, would lose a wheel, and what a pain
and one last thought to keep me sane:

Those drivers who had lots to gain
whose hearts were heavy, just the same
from weary rolling over rocks
in untilled pastures, void of flocks
who held the reigns in calloused hands
and prayed while sweat dripped from their glands
to make it to their promised lands,
would LOVE... a road... like mine.

you don't
know me anymore
just as sure as I am someone
I'm a stranger
you don't know me
and the fact feels
almost certain
like a stone wall
iron curtain
pretty sure that
I don't know you anymore.

the last time
that I saw you
least it seemed I thought I knew you
thought that I could see right through you
and I thought that you could see right through me too

but the truth is you can't see me
you replace me with your memories
golden moments overshadowed
by embarrassment and shame
and the fun we thought we had
crushed by an elephant whose name
we'd rather not be speaking of
call it madness, never love
it truly seems like you don't know me anymore.

you don't owe me anything
you don't owe me
morning sunshine
I remember
burning embers
not a good time
or a late night
but a bad a fight
you don't owe me morning coffee
or a homemade egg mcmuffin
you don't owe me...
owe me anything at all.

and since we're left with little
but a memory fading fast
it's like a cold and distant
dark and dreary
rainy lonely evening
somewhat comfortable in knowing
we don't owe each other anything
not a word, no not a thing I think,
at all.

you don't own me anymore
and maybe onetime
I was someone
just a person
who meant something
maybe one thing or another
just to fill your empty nothing
never less my little something
more than what you had had before
but now I'm just another someone
someone lurking at your door
you don't owe me anything
like you never did before
since you certainly don't know me
not so sure you ever did
you don't own and you don't owe me
anymore.

the end.

no, just go
please. keep on writing
sometimes slow
yet so inviting
I'm compelled to keep delighting
moon is full,  there's no use hiding

let the thoughts flow freely through you
open up and see what's in you
sometimes we don't know just how to
say what's meant and yet it's all true

every word is dreamlike flowing
meaning something deeper, knowing
what you need to say it's glowing
like the moon, not always showing.

so just go
please keep on writing

Beat for beat and measure for measure
grapes of gall and fermenting displeasure
You've heard it before, how time is medicinal
But for healing the heart the price is additional
tasted enough to know this can't be real
while mashing my heart in the search engine wheel

In taking that road to that carn-evil ground
for one lonely toad on the hairy-go-round,
something was lost in the folly and fun
as I'm counting the cost for all that I've done
I reach for forgiveness and snatched from the ride
am taken to places where nothing can hide

in the light of the One who is no longer mad
better than anything, more fun than sad
eternally loved, as it was from the start
the past is forgiven, all's well with my heart
as for my heroes, and the ***** I've pained
Nothing is lost and everything gained

Zzz the day
Let's let this one get away
it's okay,
gave our best to yesterday
overtime
never was my cup of tea
yet they squeeze
press the very best of me
piling on the sugar now
promising the moon and now
complaining drains
life's pleasure out of me
gimmee Z.

Skim the soup
otherwise we'll get too fat
trim the sails
and I'm off to where you're at
winter winds
sting my chin and mess my hair
better stay
wrapped in cozy blankets here
icy patches forming
on the windows
we lay warming
under covers, unaware
nothing bothers, not a care
let the phone ring
when in doubt
never mind,
I'm calling out

Stay up late
watching oldies on TV
lick the plate
leave it on the floor for me
it's okay,
make another can of soup
take a bath
and then shower off the bloop
wasting water, wasting time
waste not want not
never mind
let the toilet run and find
everything will
wait for you
you'll see~
catch your z
wait for me.

one more day to go around
nothings lost
but somethings found
the buzzing fan's
a welcome sound
draw the blinds
cause no one's gonna call
after all.
