Possible Reactions

i.

She could laugh
and tell me she’s fine.

ii.

She might ignore me
transfixed by the weight loss
commercial on the screen.

iii.

Maybe she won’t hear me.

My courage would fade
with my words
and I’d never mention it again.

iv.

There could be a pause as she looks at me
then looks away
as if I'd never said anything.

v.

She could deny it.

I wouldn’t believe her,
but I’d pretend
that I did.

vi.

There could be a moment of silence
before she says, “Yeah…so?”

I’d try to explain that she needs
to get better
but she’d pat her stomach and say
"That’s what I’m trying to do.”

vii.

She might listen to me.

Maybe she'll appreciate
that all I want to do
is help her.

vii.
The door could swing open
as her mom comes in
telling us it’s time for dinner.

The conversation would be left behind.

Sitting at the dinner table
she'd play with her food,
leaving it on the plate.

ix.

She could deny it.

I would tell her not to lie to me
and she’d get upset.

We wouldn’t talk
for two or three weeks.

x.

At the last second
I change my mind
and say “Never mind.”

She knows that I know
but she won’t mention it again.

Instead, we hold
the delicate silence between us
because I’m too afraid
to break it.

Heart Rate
Ella Pearson Dec 2014
Our love story looks like a heart monitor
keeping track of how mine reacts to you.
We've got so many spikes and dips
that sometimes I wonder
if all the lows are worth the way
my heart races around you.

I'll Reach for You
Ella Pearson Jul 2013
Through the distance, you and I
won't be distant or different,

and though we'll have to stretch
I'll always find your hand to hold.

I promise that I'll never lose
my loyalty to loneliness;

I'll always be deserving
of the trust you have in me.

No distance can out measure
the feelings that I have,

and time cannot outlast
my love for you,

so when you start to feel defeated
by the minutes and the miles

remember that I'm sure
we can pull through,

and remember that I'll reach
across any length of land

just to find a way
to hold your hand.

Countless
Ella Pearson Feb 2014
we are both powerless to the feelings
that won't go away
no matter how many times
I do

we are both caught up in ropes
that tie us together

and despite how far
they have to stretch
they never break
no matter how many times
I do

distance
Ella Pearson Jul 2013
Sometimes
it seems harder
when we're in the same room

because
even from across the room
you seem
too far away

like if I can't
reach for your hand
or wrap my arm
around your shoulder
rest my head
against your chest
or kiss your cheek

you must not
be close enough

and when I think
you're too far away
when you're across
the room
I wonder
how we do it

when I can only
see you through a screen
only hear you
on the phone
only touch you in my dreams

and when I want to be so close
that even close enough
seems far

I wonder how I manage
to be so far away from you
only dreaming
of a distance
small enough

that I can reach for your hand
or wrap my arm
around your shoulder
rest my head
against your chest
or kiss your cheek.

Your Mind
Ella Pearson Jul 2013
I want to read your mind
and see
if I'll find traces of me,
bittersweet
reminiscence.

I wonder if I ever linger
like a stain
on your thoughts
and if you ever shed a tear
when I do.

Little Feelings

He makes me feel
like a little girl.

You
make me feel like a woman.

Right now, I'm just not ready
to grow up.

chapter one
Ella Pearson Sep 2014
You
were the first chapter
of my life
but you were far
from the last

and I doubt
that when I reach the final page
I'll look back on the ones
filled
with your name

and think to myself
that those are the years
I wish
I could
relive.

But Now - You
Ella Pearson Apr 2016
I’ve been “loved” before
I’ve been “loved” based on moments that warrant affection
and I’ve begged for it back
when it waned

I learned to earn his “love”
and to prove myself worthy
in each one
of his moments

But now
you

You love me like your love
is the natural result
of the person I am
and not of the way I have acted
today

You
love me
unconditionally
in each one of our moments

Why

Why
If you
are the one
I love
then why
do I go
to him
when you make
me cry?

There's a stretch of time when you know it
but you can't say it
because you're scared you won't hear it back
and so you hold it as a secret
afraid to take it out and break it.

There's a moment in time when you say it
and wish you'd said it long ago,
the very moment you first thought it
just so that you could have seen
the face you love
explode into a smile like you've never seen before
that much earlier.

You Are a Storm
Ella Pearson Jul 2013
With you around
it rains so much
I hardly know
the sun.

I don't really think
it's worth
the rainbow
anymore.

question
Ella Pearson Nov 2014
She says "I love you"
like it is a question,
like she's asking
"Do you love me too?"

She considers hesitation
as a clear indication
that his answer is
"Not anymore."

Happy Delusions
Ella Pearson Jul 2015
I still miss you
but more than that
I miss the days
when I was deluded enough
to believe I didn't
miss you anymore.
