The First Conversation
Dave Serena Mar 2012
Life buds impatiently in enfolded palms.
Fat little hands on dough-rolled arms
Pinching and grabbing curiously.

Now bundled and folded into sturdy arms,
Wondering into melting brown eyes,
An entire life sings back a question.

He breathes in the sweetness.
Joyfully cupping at overflowing cheeks,
Memorizing thankfully with calloused hands.

A part of my anchor
Dave Serena Mar 2012
There sits an oak near my house.
Spectacular, as living things go.
Each branch, in its own right beautiful—
stretching and forking into its own shape and space,
and each as grounded as the next.
In its entirety, impossible to imagine at its beginnings.

To this new branch, growing precariously into the wind,
the anchor of this masterpiece
was never as wind-blown as me.
Each branch has surely pleaded to the wind,
wondered if it was destined to thrive
into something as great as the anchor.

My young branch has winters and storms ahead,
but I know what a beautiful design I am part of.
My creator conceived of something stunning for me.
He knew my storms before my anchor began laying its roots.
Storms cannot batter the legacy that lives in this tree.
We are each a part of our anchor.

only forever you
Dave Serena Mar 2012
your stillness waits
     waves batter beaches
     waves heaving and breathing
     the heading is lost
     light screams into darkness
     your calm heaviness sings
     illuminates true north
the lighthouse of my universe

     on the beach we lay
     this is where it begins
     waiting in buzzing agony both
something new will spark to life
     moon waves and darkness wait
forever is born in a kiss
     agony and grayness cease
     skin and colors sing electric
the lighthouse of my universe

     your calm stillness sings
     your calm heaviness sings

     together now we wait
     the anticipation of loved ones
and the watchful eyes of an Oak
     in white--we in buzzing white--
     become we
forever is born in a kiss
     your calm heaviness sings
gives birth to maybe and when
the lighthouse of my universe

winter plants a buzzing in you
our new life grows in you
      Spring Summer and Fall
your calm stillness sings to him
your calm stillness waits for him
      something new flickers awake
his light sings a new true north
      still your calm stillness sings
the lighthouse of my universe

     your calm stillness sings
     your calm heaviness sings

     tomorrow waits for us now
     waves crash on distant horizons
     waves heaving and breathing
     but still there is you
     only forever you
the lighthouse of my universe
The story of us.
