hungry, he stepped
into the café
sat down and
ordered breakfast

knew he’d no
money to pay for it
and knew full
well that he would

love what you wear
me down with

my legs ache
it’s a
bit like heartache
although rather harder to
stand

says she found me a disappointing

I’ll find my own, thanks

you ask what I’m writing
I sulk and say nothing
since you didn’t ask to read it   ..
whatever I write
it’s usually at night
with a scotch
most of it botched

feeding the ducks in
the park
wherever you want
I hate cars

aren’t as many second hand
bookshops on the charing cross road as
there were when I was younger
of course, so were they   ..
your blouse is wet
where you spilt your wine
I offered to

get you
another faux pas -
I meant another wine!
we rented a room
so cold we went to bed
with our clothes on,
but not for long
the best thing I ever wrote
down your phone number
could tell you were disappointed,
but then,
you tell it so much better   ..
perhaps things will turn out
alright yesterday wasn’t so bad
luck with tomorrow has a whole
new nothing to add    ..

went to the george, just off
borough high street, an old coaching inn,
you can just drink in the past
in here        ..
don’t like restaurants
are full of people
who could have stayed
at home and cooked
opened a bottle of scotch
“how’s that going to help?”
ever tried drinking this stuff
with the lid on    ..
bought an ice cream
and sat in the park
whilst it melted      ..

in 1979 I watched vera brittain’s testament of
youth on the BBC and bought the book
and read wilfred owen
and discovered horror and beauty and poetry

please mind the gap to the platform
as you leave the train
comes over the tannoy
must they frighten me again   ..
threw it aside
thinking of course
a poem is never

as good as
it might have been,
though    ..

never found that
travel broadens the
mind, I could

be wrong, but I
prefer to stay home
with a book
your underwears me down
with it’s expectation of
fulfilment, but I’m just not in the mood
right now I’m reading
