The flashlight
Ashley Dennis May 2013
In the fullness of night
I want to be your light.
The one that blazes the trail
For you to follow without fail.
I’ll hold your hand, and you mine
Until we make it out just fine.
Don’t look back, stay with me
Then we’ll always be
Together amidst the darkness.

The Penguin
Ashley Dennis May 2013
This little guy is pretty chill
He lives on top an icy hill.
He can go sledding on his belly
Without turning into jelly
After he crashes and smashes
Into igloos or leaves gashes
In some poor eskimo’s ice
Sculpture that used to be very nice.

He can have epic snowball fights
When the polar bears don’t bites
And the seals decide to join in
On the fun and they all grin
With excitement and wonder.
He can also go under
Water and swim with the whales
Or slide down their massive tails

In short, for that is what a penguin
Truly is, not to mention
Cute, pudgy, and the coolest
Animal that lives life to the fullest

Constellation in the Night
Ashley Dennis Jan 2014
I’d rather be a star in your life sky,
Invisible when the sun is out, but still high.
To see you go through life night after night,
Wishing to be seen in the daylight.

When you look up and see me,
I’ll shine beyond compare,
To guide you to your destiny.

When your wish soars to the sky
I’ll give it wings to fly.
And I’ll fall to the earth for you,
Just to make your wish come true.

I’m not your sun, your great light,
But I’m still a constellation
In your shimmering night

Balloon
Ashley Dennis May 2013
It was once an empty piece
Of latex, small and not yet obese.
But you breathed in your life, your magic
Until it didn’t look tragic.
And then you released it, let it roam
The great blue skies above our home.
It caught the wind and soared higher
Until we lost it in the sapphire
Sky above the city. But we still
Watched the heavens, remembering the flight,
Holding hands, forgetting the last fight.

For the Record
Ashley Dennis May 2013
The record spins and turns as it goes
Through the tracks and tiny rows
Offering up a quaint little tune
When the mood’s just right and the moon
Is high in the sky called life,
And a requiem in times of strife.
Before all that, though, came
The catchy pop tunes that seemed tame
But evolved into something different and new
That came from a movie or two.

In the reckless days of old
When we didn’t do what we were told
Hard metal and rap filled our heads
Blocking out all other sounds like leads.
But the tracks mellow out with time
Allowing smooth jazz with a bit of rhyme
To occupy the space beyond the record.

The cloud
Ashley Dennis May 2013
Behold the mighty cloud
That floats above the rest, and is proud
Of it. His fluffiness no teddy bear
Can match. Snow is jealous beyond compare
Of his whiteness, and the fact that he
Can make rain, hail, or snow be.
The trees themselves cower and shake
When he yells thunderously, and quake
When his rage electrifies the night.
He can fly low, create fog, and banish sight
Or soar in the sky with the wind, his friends,
Who help him move faster than a car tends
To go. His awesomeness no other can show.

Shower Power
Ashley Dennis May 2013
It had been said that showers
Can give magical powers,
But I didn’t believe it.
Sure, someone can smell like ****
And then take a shower, and boom
They’re the cleanest in the room.
You can go in there dead tired
And come out awake and fired
Up, ready to go on for a few more
Hours than would have been possible before.
You can appear to be the lowly peasant
Covered in dirt, grime, and cement
And then get under the magical water
And shazaam you’re a king’s daughter.
Now, however, I’m much wiser on the subject
And have learned to really respect
The powers of showers.

Heroes of the Ages
Ashley Dennis May 2013
When the game is played out
And the pieces have fallen short
And none can stand the next bout,
Their mission they don’t abort.
They stand on shaky legs
Even if they get knocked down some pegs.
Against the odds that no one
Says they can surpass, they don’t run.
For these are the heroes of the ages,
Real men and women, not sages
Or superstars. Just the average Joe
That does all they can to go
On without any fuel left in the tank.

Your wannabe knight
Ashley Dennis May 2013
Oh how I’d love to be,
You protector and shield bearer
Not to mention, just me.

I’ll stay by your side for you to call
Whether we fight or not
Whenever you fall.

Please don’t push me away
I need you in my life
But I’ve lost my day.

My chance at you is gone
And now all I can do is just
Watch your back as you pass on.

Time warps
Ashley Dennis May 2013
Where does the time go?
Yes, it seems everyone asks this
While they watch as a time they know
Slowly goes into the dark abyss.
I, like many others, swear
To only look for ten minutes, at most,
Okay, perhaps ten more if I dare,
Upon the new twitter post.
But I cannot resist the pull
I feel towards the status updates
Maybe I really am a fool
For wasting time when homework awaits.

Trigger
Ashley Dennis May 2013
As I stare into space
I try not to focus on the race
Of words coming from her mouth
For they make my eyes go south.
I feel myself slump in my chair
But close my eyes I do not dare.
I resist the temptation of rest,
And focus on my test.

Friends
Ashley Dennis May 2013
For the first time ever, we twirl
Around on the dance floor
Tonight I’m finally a girl
In your eyes. And you, I realize, I adore.

We’ve been friends for so long
We never thought of each other as
Anything other than that. Is it so wrong
To tell you I like you or has

The moment passed me by?
I should tell you, but I can’t seem
To make out the words to say it, I’m shy
Around you for the first time.

The Little Things
Ashley Dennis May 2013
I can’t help but utter a curse
Or two, after the strap of my purse
Breaks and my things begin to roll
On the floor. Or my cereal bowl
Decides that it wants to fly
Away from the counter and die.
When my computer shuts down
And my work doesn’t save, I frown
And want my laptop to feel my pain
Cuz I don’t want to type it again.
When I trip over air, but I swear
Up and down that there was something there.
When I stub my toe on something
And hop up and down yelping.

It’s the little things in life
That tend to cause so much strife.

The art of this world
Ashley Dennis May 2013
As he crafts his world he stops
To add just a few drops
Of color to his otherwise gray
And desolate landscape. A ray
Of sunshine here, a dash
Of forest that seems to crash
Into the dark hues of the sky.
He adds stars that twinkle in his eye
And places the moon in the center
Of the night. Then the crickets enter
The peaceful scene, softly humming a tune
Creating harmony with the moon.
The bright reds, greens, yellows, and blues
Are colored in, which is what truly glues
His masterpiece together, but it
Isn’t complete without a little bit
Of chaos that comes from people.
