Forewarned
Seven rain drops hit my head from here to the car
I am relieved that it has finally begun
As I drive to work I hear my mother's voice
remember, she says, the road is very slick when it first starts.

I love my Mother. Always looking out.
I picture her now, looking out the window at the rain
Counting the drops like so many worries adding up
over years and years and years

Now the rain is pouring down
buckets of water are swept left-ward off my windshield
it's raining cat's on dogs
so many metaphors this fall morning

The ground is a little slick
there is a light at the end of the exit
where a few more cars than usual wait for green
I am lucky to stop just in time.
Please excuse the rough edges. I wrote this spontaneously and I want to get it out there before I edit it to death.
