Small Town
Davis Sep 2019
How can people stay in this small town
There’s nothing to do here
The only way to go is down
This place makes me want to disappear
So many never escape
They stay in this town their whole life
It’s like their being held down by tape
Maybe all I’m doing is causing strife
My dreams are too big for this place
I have to leave to follow them all
I can’t succeed in this small of a place
But maybe I should just stay so I don’t fall

Rhyme
Davis Sep 2019
Everybody wants to rhyme
It doesn’t matter if the meaning is like grime
Bad writing has never been a crime
Who cares if the poet would make a better mime
Nobody wants art that is sublime
Musicians do this all the time
They’re making well over a dime
Look at all the charts those singers climb
Just admit this is more pleasant than a chime
You can always just throw in random words like slime
Don’t forget you can even make up words such as cime
You know this is poetry in its prime

Expectations
Davis Sep 2019
A boy came home and said he wanted to be an engineer
His parents told him that was a great major to go into
A boy came home and said he wanted to be a dermatologist
His parents were ecstatic and spit out their beer
A teen came home and said he didn’t know what he wanted to do
His parents suggested being a cardiologist
A teen came home and said he wanted to be a cook
His parents told him to go with one of the jobs he used to say
A teen came home and said he wanted to be a writer
His parents told him he couldn’t write a successful book
A teen came home and said he wanted to write a screenplay
His parents told him he was meant for something brighter
A disappointed engineering major came home and complained
His parents told him it would get better
A bored engineering major came home with his perfect girlfriend
His parents said she wasn’t good enough and explained
A lonely engineering major came home with a failing letter
His parents scolded him and began to condescend
A sad man graduated with a degree he didn’t enjoy
His parents were so pleased
A depressed man went to a job that he hated
His parents were so proud of their little boy
A destroyed man never found a woman that appeased
It was okay because his parents were elated
