Ode to Felix
Ruth Statz Nov 2024
O happy day! Whence on high the heavens split.
Almighty hand descended and touched the face of the earth,
Planting His mark, indelible, none like it.
Sing out! Shout praise! Give thanks for this blessed birth!

Your eyes, divine! Of heaven they shine!
Your lips I would kiss, nor a spot would miss!
Fresh as morning dew, purest and new!
You are the dawn, I am the day.
So rest your head, while I labor away.

What I would give to see your face,
To rock you gently in close embrace;
Feel your heart against mine so real, so warm.
I’d kiss your lips. Oh see! Oh taste!
Throw down my life ‘fore you see harm.

Would that words had wings to fly.
Would that heart's longing had legs to carry it.
Would this ache in my chest could swallow the world and you with it!

Heaven’s bright threshold, an angel did cross,
Stepping on earth for you, his first and last.
At the side of your bed he kissed your sweet head.
‘Fore reaching you, a mighty sword, the unholy must first pass.

Oh happy day! Fortunate! Happy!
Though leagues may part us;
Leaves and rain, the season’s change,
Signifies nothing. For all I do love thee!

Lost in the Past
Ruth Statz Nov 2024
She looked in the glass and saw in her eyes
The facade of her life: a wall, a disguise.
Unable to name it but the glass doesn’t lie.
Instead she stared blankly, too weary to cry.
Traces of tears once shed dried where they flowed.
Oh weary soul! To whom can you go?

Looking behind is a face like her own:
sunshiny smile and blushing undertone,
Full of hopes and dreams, brimming with zeal,
No lines of suffering yet broke her ideals.
How much lies ahead! How much more to grow!
Oh blissful soul! Where did you go?

She hurt; she broke. She looked in the glass
hoping to see one thing—but she’s stuck in the past.
Her heart was beautiful; her face told another tale:
Reaching so high, lost her footing and failed.
Eyelashes droop hiding hot tears below.
Oh sad soul! How little you know!
