A dog is a source of love,
A way of your heart feeling warm with love.
Sometimes you may think that they might not love you,
But yet you know they do.

But like everyone you and I know,
They must go.
You think of that sometimes but it’s in the back of your head,
And when it happens you wish you too were dead.

So when it happens you stop short,
Like a ship stuck at its port.
Your life feels so incomplete,
Your face is wet with tears and your hair is unneat.

And snuggle, pet, pat, and hug your dog,
Let them snuggle and resemble a log.
You feel trapped inside like you can’t love,
Your hope flying like a message dove.

You may not know it but your heart isn’t going to hurt forever,
It will heal heal the trauma it has endeavored.
Your heart is just damaged,
It will eventually manage.

You try to pretend that it never happened,
To avoid the hash pain and to let your heart mend.
But they’re your best friend and they loved you,
And it’s hard when the pain is new.

So love them like they loved you,
Deep as the ocean blue.
Live and laugh, and love for them,
And their memory won’t go dim.

You miss them cause you love them forever,
And love is clever.
It’s not goodbye as more of a see you tomorrow,
When my heart isn’t as full of sorrow.

That is a dog’s purpose, their dream, at their pace,
To make us laugh and feel joyful grace.
