Before the sun brightens our half of the earth
Birds chirp at the break of dawn
You and I, my love
Turn dream to action and embark
Fill our knapsacks with blankets and sweets.

We’ll slip away unnoticed
Without maps or shoes
Fools desperate to explore the unknown.
We’ll gyre the states as gypsys
Ride rails to the sweet scene of a passing countryside

Our destinations many
Kyoto to Anchorage
Shanghai then Budapest
Should we lose our way
It wouldn’t matter the slightest
Should I wake in your embrace at the crack of a new dawn.

A crackle from wet wood
Tossed carelessly into a blazing bonfire
Making sparks and ash explode
From this contained pit
Stuttering and spewing
Like fireflies during summer's night

Is there a hidden desire
Emanating from these glowing flames
Ascending as a smoke toward swollen rain clouds
But dissipating into nothingness
Before it began to pour.

Rain Dance
Zachary Helland May 2014
Underneath a golden light
my hands fell behind your hips
and we danced outside
in the middle of the street
to the silent tune of our breathing

As we circled that perimeter
our earthly worries drifted away
you'd laugh everything I stepped on your foot
then afterwords you'd stomp on mine

We must have been quite the sight
to curious neighbors
peering from their bedroom windows
as we swung each other like gypsies
until neither of us could breathe

Loud noises break silence
Zachary Helland May 2014
Perched against a grey wall
underneath an open window
is where to find me
whoever may be searching

Frogs croak outside
the only light that can be seen
comes from neighbors porch lights
whoever may be looking

There's nothing to see this late
sounds of passing planes echo through
heavy clouds
imagine being a passenger
against a smaller window
thousands of miles above mine

Experiencing the same view
from a different perspective

The cool breeze and stale electric hums
may appear insignificant
but they refuse to go unnoticed
to whoever may be searching

The Space Between
Zachary Helland Mar 2014
Right foot pressed to the accelerator
racing ahead of every car
in your vicinity
to slide into the left lane
and watch the following cars
through your rear-view mirror
honk and scream alone in vain

There’s a wayward shift in speed
followed by an anxious whip
of a commuter’s head to assure himself
that his wagon will clear
the space between two cars to his left
that come and go sporadically
driving quicker as the distant merge begins to appear

So when that day rolls around
when you find yourself reading bumpers
keeping a tenacious grip on that steering wheel
racing alongside silhouettes of commuters
each determined to be the first one
to merge into to left lane
and set the speed for following *******.

Wouldn't bother a deaf kid
Zachary Helland May 2014
During the earliest hour
While the house sets
Light peeks through my brothers closed door

If you put one ear to his door
And listen carefully you can hear
Him sing along to Frank Sinatra

Soft and off key
Using improvised lyrics like
People do to fill in those gaps

While it's this early
And absence is a pleasure
Sing like nobody is listening

Wooden Trains
Zachary Helland Mar 2014
One short stride of a child, to obtain
a starry blanket amidst his toys
crumpled between tracks and trains
engines and freight cars under his toes

One small dog scurries away at the sight
of an unsteady boy stomping ferociously
top heavy under his new height
wrapping and thrashing in serenity

Scattered patches of matte gold stars
were stitched to this azul blanket
and stretched across unfolding arms
sending coos through a room, otherwise bare

This secular blanket has been dragged through
various kitchen floors, picked up dust
snagged on loose floorboard nails, ruined
and torn with his clothes through the decades

Now a horn can be heard in the distance
oncoming train descends the horizon
tired, weary, out of patience
anxious to ride the train back home.
