So many sides
MJ May 2019
Sometimes
Life needs
the middle

So many sides
As if we aren’t
In a mixing bowl

So I mix it up
I push the sides
to the center

I pull them
I turn them
I mold them
I mesh them

That is how
To make waffles

Dirt Is No Home
MJ Feb 2019
My wife
the ocean

an expanse never ending
beyond my perception

She is molecules upon molecules coaching the life of the sea.

Follow me
to the solidarity of one

She instructs the purpose
And pleasure of life

She spots me above
I am the unknowing passenger

Her plain produces curves
Her tempest whittles my boat

I wrestle the sails
plead for dry land.

She smiles
laughs
invites me to the deep.

Dirt is no home for you
Come be a fish
Meet my soul

No

Maybe

OK

One does not barter with the Sea.

Stairs
MJ Mar 2019
One step,
another step
These stairs of life,
upside down
They walk on me.

Patience

I cannot find you
You will not find me

I saw you one day
spry little red fox
camouflaged by dawn
slowly climbing down
the high autumn field

I always imagined
your strategic prance
narrow yet refined
It was then the time
to meet your wisdom

But no, our gaze met
we both knew the truth
was the beginning
and the end
You vanished
as if
you were never found.

I will keep looking
Even as life moves on
hiding last minutes
Beneath doors
As the mouse
Slowly
Journeys to the field

Unknown Friend
MJ Jun 2019
I hear your pain
I just want you to feel
the smile of a stranger

A gift of hope
A slice of cake
Placed neatly on a plate

A sweet for you
Dear Reader
Friend

I want so much
for you to taste
Peace

I pray you find it
Or it find you

Dear Weary Soul
MJ Mar 2019
Dear weary soul, are you aware
there are more stars, than grains
    of sand?

Did you know, the places you would go
the stories told, through the wrinkles
     of your hand?

Though you feel small, you shall rise
Like Maya, it is no disguise.

Everyday you wake, you see a new light
You made it again, you veteran
You can do this, now fight!

You
MJ Jul 2019
You
Clever, clever
If I ever
Found a way
Into your never

A place of awe
Of old direction
A face on water
Yet no reflection

I walk on rocks
Near the shore
You’ll find me there
Evermore

Grand Finale
MJ Mar 2019
The night fades like the flavor
of vanilla ice cream after a taste
of chocolate before the crunch
of hardened cookie mixed with the gush
of cream mixed in a different cream
of which the origin is all nearby

The night is the final last report
of the firework which pounded the sky
of a small town in the middle
of a big land
of people that dream dreams
of putting cookies in ice cream

Twists and Turns
MJ Apr 2019
Life is not easy
  So many twists and turns
People trying to find happiness
Who likely have no clue to it’s whereabouts
As if it were a trinket to be found

Sometimes I wonder
Even if they knew how to be happy
Would they choose to be happy
or are they just
pretending
To want something just because they know they do not have it

I don’t envy them
  Those with happiness I mean
I respect them.
I have it sometimes too
  Happiness
I find it in the twists and turns
  Life is not easy

My Son’s Sunset
MJ Feb 2019
See the lights my son

A thousand candles lit on land
Another thousand reflect off the sea

Every spark shares a story

The flames flirt with the darkness
gathering in numbers
they tease the sun to sleep

The stars ready to share their glory

Now your own light.
Take this city by night
I took a photo standing on a veranda overlooking the city and the ocean while holding my infant son at sunset.

Good Morning
MJ Feb 2020
Mom is the little bird at first light

Eager for sunshine

Yet happy

Snuggled in her nest
A good morning poem for my wife

Good Neighbor
MJ Jan 2020
I don’t call myself good.
I just happen to know goodness

He’s like a next door neighbor
     Who keeps inviting himself over

If you don’t know him
      Ask him to greet you

He will teach you hope
Then remind you when you forget
