2020
Muffled, muted and masked by fear
Concealed, covered and clouded by blame
Aware, awake and alerted to smear
Arrogant, abrasive and addicted to fame
Saddened, stranded and stalled by the faithful
Discounted, disputed and disinfected by masses
Ignited, inflamed and incensed by the wasteful
Praised, proclaimed and promoted by classes
Risen, righteous and revered in apparent truth
Verbal, vindicated and victorious, everything to mend
Defeated, deflated and demoted by radical youth
Bitter, beaten and bested, nothing left to defend
Laura Heckman Aug 2020
No concert, no game, no movie, no show
No restaurant, no bar, nowhere to go
No football, no hockey, no MLB
No racing, no hoops, nothing to see
No parks, no playgrounds, no scenic view
No stores, no gyms, nothing to do
No work, no commute, no morning train
No travel at all, especially by plane
No school bus, no teaching, no end of year test
Nothing to do but stay home and rest
No posting, no pics, no Facebook spree,
Individual thought is taboo for me
No discussion, no talk, no healthy debate
Nothing to say lest one gets irate
No opinion, no vision, no idea is fine
Especially when yours conflicts with mine
No polls, no voting, no liberty tree
No life worth living in the land of the free
Laura Heckman Aug 2020
Color red, color blue, all caught up in a purple hue
Voting for policy not pretty faces
Supporting pro-life and green spaces
Don’t put me in a box…
Left wing, right wing, all sway from the same string
Hung upon the separation from state
Never discount the science of faith
Don’t put me in a box…
A-team, B-team, all stuck in the same scene
Forced choices ‘tween belonging and fights
Try choosing Jesus, gay pride and equal rights
Don’t put me in a box…
I scream, you scream, all chasing the American dream
If and when I’ve exhausted my voice
And given my life for God and choice
You can put me in a box.
